3 Players Who Will Make OR Break The New York Jets

Do you remember those late-night study sessions back in college? The ones where a cup of coffee at 2:00 AM was the jet fuel that carried you to the next page of notes. Sleep screamed your name, but your GPA whispered, “You know these next few finals will make or break your semester?” Well, believe it or not, the NFL is a lot like that. Every team has a handful of players that will make or break their year based on their season’s performance. Even for an organization with as limited talent as the New York Jets.

Let’s dive deep into the 3 players who must excel for the Jets to begin turning their franchise around. We’ll talk about the player’s best-case scenario, worst-case scenario, and the impact they have made up to this point. All passengers prepare for takeoff.

1. Garrett Wilson -WR

Impact: Now this comes as a surprise to no one. In his last full season with the team, wide receiver Garrett Wilson ranked 3rd in targets, 5th in receptions, and 11th in receiving yards across the league. In fact, he was the first player in Jets history to record 1,000+ receiving yards in his first three seasons.

This is what putting the team on your back looks like. I could easily see Garrett getting back to elite form this year now that he’s healthy.

Best case scenario: Garrett is top 10 in all major receiving categories, an all-pro, pro-bowler, and helps the Jets get their first winning season since 2015 under Todd Bowles. Wilson has all the talent in the world; it’s now up to the team to capitalize on it.

Worst-case scenario: New York wastes another year of its rising star by not putting him in the best position to succeed. Lack of innovation from the play calling, no gameplan to scheme the ball in his hands, and no real attempt to put a serviceable quarterback under center.

2. Will McDonald IV – DE

Garrett Wilson is the obvious face of the Jets offense, but who will step up on the other side of the ball? After only his 3rd year in the league, pass rusher Will McDonald has a chance to be that dominant presence.

Impact: In 2024, he was the first player for New York to have a double-digit sack season since Jonathan Abraham in 2001. Pair that with his franchise record performance against the Browns last year, stacking up 4 sacks in a single game! It’s now up to Aaron Glenn and this new staff to tap into McDonald’s full potential. I feel like he is barely scratching the surface.

Best case scenario: Will McDonald takes the next step to becoming one of the league’s best pass rushers with 12+ sacks next season. The Jets’ defense turns into a top 15 unit and finally resteablishes themselves as one of the most physical teams in the NFL.

Worst-case scenario: This new regime can’t get cute and take Will away from what he does best. Get after the quarterback. Wasting energy by being in the game on obvious running downs, handing off the dirt away from the line, or dropping back into coverage. All roads lead down the same path. Disaster.

3. Isaiah Williams – KR

Now I bet you didnt see this coming! Yes, one of the most important players on this team will be an undrafted free agent who the Jets actually cut and re-signed in 2025.

Impact: In week 8 of 2025, Isaiah Williams was named AFC Player of the Week for his special teams performance against the Cincinnati Bengals. Putting up over 130 return yards, the Jets were able to pull off their first win of the season. He was also voted as the alternate kick returner for the NFL Pro Bowl.

Best-case scenario: Williams turns into one of the best hidden gems across the league. The ability to consistently win the battle of field position is pivotal throughout a game. Especially for an offense that could struggle early to find its identity. On top of that, kickers in today’s NFL can easily be in range from 60 yards out. When you only have to get 1 or 2 first downs to score points, it takes a ton of pressure off an offense.

Worse-case scenario: Isaiah Williams returns to old habits with ball security, the Jets are ranked in the back half of teams in terms of kick return yards, and Williams goes back to a fridge practice squad player. Based on his impressive production last season, it’s hard to envision a world where we see this much regression.

The Final Breakdown

Each of these players is going to be extremely important in making or breaking the Jets’ season. Between Garrett Wilson being a match-up nightmare, Will McDonald constantly creating pressure on the quarterback, and Isaish Williams being the field position X-Factor, I think the ceiling is incredibly high for this team.
