Bears Pro Bowl Center Drew Dalman Announces Surprise Retirement at Age 27

The Chicago Bears were dealt a shocking blow to their offensive line on Tuesday as Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman informed the team he is retiring from the NFL at just 27 years old, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Dalman’s decision comes as a major surprise across the league. The veteran center was coming off the best season of his career and had just completed the first year of a three-year, $42 million contract he signed with Chicago during the 2025 offseason.

The move was initially viewed as one of the key additions that helped stabilize the Bears’ offensive line and support quarterback Caleb Williams during a pivotal season for the franchise. Dalman played every offensive snap in 2025, anchoring the middle of the line while helping Chicago significantly improve its protection compared to previous seasons.

A former fourth-round pick out of Stanford in 2021, Dalman spent the first four seasons of his career with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Bears in free agency. Across five NFL seasons, he appeared in 74 games and steadily developed into one of the league’s most reliable centers.

His 2025 performance earned him Pro Bowl honors and strong marks from Pro Football Focus, finishing seventh among centers in run-blocking grade and 14th in pass-blocking grade while allowing just one sack and 24 total pressures.

Despite his recent success and long-term contract, Dalman has opted to step away from football unexpectedly. As of now, the exact reason behind his retirement has not been publicly disclosed.

The sudden decision leaves Chicago with a major hole in the middle of its offensive line just weeks before the start of the new league year.

What Is Next for the Bears

Dalman’s retirement immediately shifts the Bears’ offseason priorities.

Replacing a Pro Bowl center is never simple, especially this late in the offseason, but Chicago may already be exploring its options. According to reports, the team has shown interest in free-agent center Tyler Linderbaum, one of the most highly regarded interior linemen expected to be available.

If the Bears pursue a veteran replacement, Linderbaum would represent a premium solution capable of stepping directly into Dalman’s role. However, Chicago could also explore the 2026 NFL Draft or internal depth options depending on how the free-agent market unfolds.

Complicating matters further is uncertainty along the rest of the offensive line. Tackle Ozzy Trapilo is recovering from a knee ligament injury, leaving his availability for the 2026 season unclear. With both center and tackle now question marks, Chicago may need to address multiple spots along the line.

Protecting Caleb Williams will remain the organization’s top priority after the young quarterback showed major progress in 2025 while taking significantly fewer sacks.

Dalman’s unexpected retirement removes a cornerstone piece from that protection plan, forcing the Bears to quickly pivot as they prepare for free agency and the upcoming season.
