The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal that sends one of the league’s top young defensive backs to the NFC West.
According to multiple reports, the Rams will send the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to Kansas City along with a fifth- and sixth-round selection in the 2026 draft and a 2027 third-round pick. McDuffie is also expected to receive a new long-term contract with Los Angeles once the trade becomes official.
McDuffie, 25, was selected by the Chiefs with the 21st overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and quickly developed into one of the league’s best cornerbacks. During his four seasons in Kansas City, he played a key role in a defense that helped the Chiefs reach three Super Bowls and win two championships.
The former Washington standout earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and became known as one of the most versatile defensive backs in football. Across his tenure with Kansas City, McDuffie appeared in 66 total games, including the playoffs, while recording 246 tackles along with several impact plays as both a coverage defender and blitzer.
For the Rams, the move addresses a major need in their secondary. Los Angeles had been widely expected to target a cornerback early in the 2026 draft, but instead secured a proven elite player. With McDuffie now in the fold, the Rams can use their remaining first-round selection at No. 13 overall to address other roster needs, including potential help along the offensive line.
The trade also brings McDuffie back to his home state. The California native grew up in Orange County and now returns to Southern California as the newest cornerstone of the Rams’ defense.
For Kansas City, the decision reflects a familiar pattern. Rather than committing massive long-term money to a cornerback approaching a new contract, the Chiefs once again opted to move the player for significant draft capital, similar to their previous decision to trade L’Jarius Sneed instead of extending him.
What Is Next for the Chiefs
While trading a player of McDuffie’s caliber is never easy, the move aligns with the Chiefs’ broader offseason strategy.
Kansas City entered the offseason dealing with salary cap pressure and several roster holes after a disappointing 2025 campaign. By trading McDuffie before he reached the end of his rookie deal, the Chiefs avoid committing major money to a new extension while adding valuable draft capital.
The return dramatically improves Kansas City’s flexibility in the upcoming draft. The Chiefs now hold two first-round picks, their original top-10 selection and the Rams’ No. 29 overall pick, giving the front office multiple opportunities to add young impact players.
Those additional assets could allow Kansas City to rebuild key areas of the roster while keeping the championship window open around quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs could target defensive help to replace McDuffie in the secondary, but the added draft capital also opens the door for reinforcements at running back, wide receiver, and pass rush help for next season.
Ultimately, the move signals a shift toward reloading the roster with younger talent rather than committing a massive contract to a single defensive star. While losing McDuffie creates an immediate void in the secondary, the draft haul gives Kansas City the resources needed to reshape the roster and begin the next phase of its championship pursuit.
