In a surprising move to many, the Las Vegas Raiders brought back 27-year-old defensive end Malcolm Koonce. The deal is for 1 year at 11 million. Last coming off a knee injury in 2024, Koonce compiled 4.5 sacks; the team expected more from Koonce, after he had eight sacks in 2023, but the knee injury could have played a role in 2025.
This will be the second year fully recovered from the knee injury that kept him out of the 2024 season, and under new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, who is switching to a base 3-4, the edge rusher could be successful. Leonard has been the Raiders’ defensive line coach for the past few years and knows Koonce well.
3-4 Fit
Koonce can play edge rusher and stand-up linebacker in a 3-4 defense. He has shown the ability to take quick first steps and bend around tackles. Koonce needs to be more consistent with it. As 3-4 outside linebackers, Koonce will need to rush standing up, attack from wider alignments, and blitz from different angles.
Leonard could use Koonce as a situational pass-rusher or use multiple edge rushers to maximize his skills. Using multiple edge players could keep Koonce fresh, especially with Maxx Crosby likely being back and the addition of Kwity Paye. He would be able to explode late in games without having to take on many blockers. Leonard could create pressure packages that allow the edge rusher to attack the edge with the Raiders’ other defensive linemen. On passing downs, the defense could use multiple looks—stunts, twists, and simulated pressures—to free up Koonce for cleaner rushing lanes toward the quarterback.
Bottom Line
Ultimately, the Raiders’ defense under Leonard’s leadership will depend on how well players adapt to the new scheme. For Koonce, the change could present an opportunity to reach his full potential. With his speed, motor, and developing pass-rush skills, Koonce has the potential to become a key contributor in the Raiders’ new 3–4 front. If Koonce has a big year, he could cash in on free agency next offseason.
