The San Francisco 49ers made one of the biggest wide receiver moves of free agency by signing veteran Mike Evans to a three-year, $60.4 million deal, ending his legendary 12-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Evans joins a loaded San Francisco offense led by quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey, and tight end George Kittle as the 49ers look to push for a Super Bowl.
Evans leaves Tampa Bay as one of the greatest players in franchise history after recording 866 receptions, 13,052 yards, and 108 touchdowns while earning six Pro Bowl selections and winning a Super Bowl in 2020. His 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career are an NFL record and tied with Jerry Rice for the longest streak in league history.
Although injuries limited Evans to just eight games in 2025 due to a broken collarbone, he still showed flashes of his elite contested-catch ability, finishing the season with 30 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns. Before that, he posted another 1,000-yard campaign in 2024 with 74 catches, 1,004 yards, and 11 touchdowns.
San Francisco adds Evans at a time when the team may have additional targets available in the passing game. With uncertainty surrounding other receivers on the roster and George Kittle recovering from an Achilles injury, Evans could quickly step into a significant role in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. His size and red-zone dominance also give Purdy a true boundary receiver that the offense has lacked at times.
Mike Evans Fantasy Football Impact
Mike Evans’ landing in San Francisco creates an intriguing fantasy football outlook. Even at 32 years old, Evans still profiles as a high-upside WR2 thanks to his role as a touchdown scorer and downfield threat. The 49ers offense is one of the most efficient passing attacks in the league, with Brock Purdy leading the NFL in yards per attempt, passer rating, and passing success rate during his career.
Evans should benefit from the offensive environment, especially if San Francisco has available targets due to roster turnover or early-season injuries. While younger receivers like Ricky Pearsall will remain involved, Evans could quickly command a strong share of the high-value targets in Shanahan’s offense, particularly in the red zone, where he has consistently been one of the league’s best.
The biggest concern for fantasy managers is age. Evans will turn 33 during the 2026 season, and wide receivers historically see a decline in production at this stage of their careers. His efficiency also dipped in 2025, partially due to injuries and quarterback inconsistency in Tampa Bay.
Still, Evans’ skill set has always translated well to fantasy production because of his ability to win contested catches and score touchdowns. In a strong offensive system with a highly efficient quarterback, he projects as a WR2 with upside in fantasy football drafts.
His arrival will also impact the rest of the 49ers’ receiving corps. Ricky Pearsall likely slides into a secondary role in the offense, reducing his fantasy ceiling, while Evans immediately becomes one of Purdy’s most reliable downfield and red-zone targets. If Evans remains healthy, the move places him in one of the better offensive environments he has played in during the later stages of his career.
