Tennessee Lands Dynamic 2027 3-Star ATH Jaden Butler: Background and Commitment Details

Tennessee, Jaden Butler, 2027

On Thursday, the Tennessee Volunteers landed their fifth commitment in the Class of 2027. Jaden Butler is a three-star athlete from Tennessee. Butler chose the Vols over Indiana, Vanderbilt and Missouri. He is the No. 24 player from Tennessee and the No. 41 athlete in the country, according to 247Sports.

Jaden Butler Background

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete plays wide receiver and defensive back at Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee. Although he plays both sides of the ball in high school, he is projected to be a safety for the Vols. Not only has he excelled on offense and defense throughout his career, but he has also been a guard for his high school basketball team.

Butler was an All-State selection in 2025 during his junior season. That year, he spent extensive time on both offense and defense. He recorded 40 tackles, three tackles for loss, two pass deflections and six interceptions. His six interceptions gave him the seventh-highest total among Tennessee high school athletes, according to MaxPreps. On offense, not only did he have 540 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, but he also had 503 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

As a sophomore in 2024, Butler had 45 tackles, two pass deflections, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions on defense. Offensively, he caught 26 passes for 417 yards and three touchdowns.

Butler even saw action as a freshman in 2023, recording 28 tackles, eight pass deflections and two interceptions. However, he had a limited role on offense, catching only six passes for 101 yards and one touchdown.

Why Butler Chose Tennessee

He has received 14 FBS offers, including six from SEC programs. Although several teams saw potential in Butler, Tennessee stood out to him because of head coach Josh Heupel. In an interview with Volquest, Butler mentioned how Heupel’s visit to him played a pivotal role in his decision:

“When the head coach came down, it was a big thing,” Butler said. “A lot of times they don’t come, and so when he came down it meant a big thing to me.”

In the same interview, Butler mentioned how Tennessee’s newly acquired defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, also stood out to him. Knowles will make his coaching debut with the Vols in 2026 after serving as Penn State’s defensive coordinator last season. In 2024, his defense helped Ohio State win a national championship. Knowles’ expertise and player development helped nudge Butler to the Volunteers:

“[Knowles] came up with the 4-2-5 defense, so he is very familiar, and he is great at developing players as well,” Butler said. “He talked to me about how they could see me at a lot of positions spread across the field to help them.”

Butler’s multi-sport background and his ability to play multiple positions could make him a valuable asset to Tennessee in the future. Plus, his long frame and athleticism should help him adapt to playing multiple defensive positions.
