Prediction season is finally upon us! With the college football season kicking off in just over thirty days, it is time to begin breaking down the landscape. Coming off the recent ACC kickoff event in Charlotte, there is plenty to discuss regarding the most controversial conference in the Power Four.
Combining on-site insights, performance index metrics, and detailed roster breakdowns, here are my full 2026 season predictions for all 17 teams in the ACC, ranked from bottom to top.
#17 Stanford Cardinal
- Coaching & Outlook: First-time head coach Tavita Pritchard (former Washington Commanders QBs coach) takes over a program where Andrew Luck serves as GM. Per the LFTG Performance Index, Stanford ranks as the #1 worst roster in college football, bringing in no transfer portal class to speak of and fielding 27 underclassmen combined with the 4th hardest conference schedule.
- Offense: Davis Warren steps in at starting QB, though expectations are low. Running back Micah Ford will serve as the offense’s primary centerpiece. The team returns 12 starters total (6 offense, 6 defense).
- Defense: Linebacker Matt Rose is the lone star anchor and one of the premier linebackers in the ACC, but one player won’t make up for overall production deficiencies.
- Projected Record: 3-9 overall (1-8 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected wins against Hawai’i (Week 1), Elon (Week 7), and an ACC victory over NC State (Week 8).
#16 Syracuse Orange
- Coaching & Outlook: Head coach Fran Brown enters Year 3 facing clear job pressure. He made a splash by hiring defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, the former Division III national powerhouse Mount Union head coach.
- Offense: Quarterback Steve Angeli returns after missing most of last season with a torn Achilles (notably leading the nation in passing before his injury). While the skill weaponry is solid, major stability questions remain along the offensive line.
- Defense: The linebacking corps is strong, but the defensive front has major questions despite adding 9 Power Four starters via the portal.
- Projected Record: 3-9 overall (1-8 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Expected to start 3-1 with wins over New Hampshire, Cal, and UConn before facing a brutal back-half gauntlet that ends against Notre Dame.
#15 Boston College Eagles
- Coaching & Outlook: Bill O’Brien is taking over offensive play-calling duties in what feels like a last-ditch effort to save his job. Although BC is allegedly increasing financial backing, their heavy focus on high school recruiting over portal reliance hasn’t paid full dividends yet.
- Offense: The offense took a devastating hit when star tight end Kalen Chudzinski (a top 5–10 TE nationally) suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the spring. D-II transfer Mason McKenzie takes over at QB with huge question marks, while Evan Dickens provides stability at RB.
- Defense: Ranks as the worst Power Four team on the LFTG Performance Index (#102 overall). The secondary is the strongest unit, while the front seven has deep concerns.
- Projected Record: 2-10 overall (1-7 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected wins against Maine (Week 3) and Syracuse (Week 12).
#14 North Carolina Tar Heels
- Coaching & Outlook: Bill Belichick enters Year 2 alongside offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, forming the oldest head coach/OC pairing in the country. With massive resources poured into the program, Belichick will be on a scorching hot seat if UNC fails to reach a bowl game.
- Offense: Western Carolina transfer Taryn Dickens departed due to off-field issues, leaving Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards as an unproven starter at QB. Wide receiver Jordan Shipp and running back Damon June lead the skill group, but the offensive line must replace every single starter from 2025.
- Defense: Coordinated by Steve Belichick, the defensive line looks strong, but linebackers and secondary depth remain questionable.
- Projected Record: 4-8 overall (2-6 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected wins against East Tennessee State, Syracuse, UConn, and a rivalry win against NC State.
#13 Duke Blue Devils
- Coaching & Outlook: Manny Diaz’s reigning ACC Champions (7-5 last year) got heavily gutted in the transfer portal, returning just 7 starters total.
- Offense: San Jose State transfer Walker Eget steps in as a game-managing QB. The offense will heavily rely on star RB Nate Sheppard (1,100+ yards, 11 TDs in 2025) and TE Jeremiah Hasley. The OL returns just two starters.
- Defense: Abysmal defensive output last season forces Diaz to rely on five transfer additions in the secondary, while the defensive line faces critical questions.
- Projected Record: 5-7 overall (3-6 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected wins against Tulane, Stanford, William & Mary, UNC, and Boston College.
#12 California Golden Bears
- Coaching & Outlook: Former Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi takes over as head coach to fix a defense that struggled severely last season.
- Offense: The offense is completely loaded. QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (JKS) is backed by Washington transfer RB Adam Mohammed (Washington), WRs Chase Hendricks (Ohio) and Ian Strong (Rutgers), and elite center Tyson Ruffins. JKS highlighted a stacked tight end room featuring New Mexico transfer Dorian Thomas (56 rec, 560 yds, 4 TDs), Mason Mini, and Rico Walker.
- Defense: DTs Jayden Williams and Stanley Saole-McKenzie lead the front, alongside senior LBs Jayden Wayne and Justin Beadles.
- Projected Record: 5-7 overall (3-6 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: A non-conference upset over UCLA in Week 1, with ACC home wins over Wake Forest, Stanford, and Pittsburgh.
#11 Wake Forest Demon Deacons
- Coaching & Outlook: Jake Dickert massively overachieved in Year 1 (9-3), but losing heavy senior leadership points to regression to the mean.
- Offense: UNC transfer QB Gio Lopez has looked poised and confident in practice, though he lacks proven playmakers and operates behind an OL returning only one starter.
- Defense: The defense returns 8 starters from a unit that ranked #8 nationally in defensive success rate last year. I expect to see regression to the mean with this group.
- Projected Record: 6-6 overall (3-6 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected wins over Akron, Purdue, Stanford, Virginia, Merrimack, and Duke to secure bowl eligibility.
#10 NC State Wolfpack
- Coaching & Outlook: Dave Doeren’s program momentum appears to be waning, but an extremely manageable schedule keeps them afloat.
- Offense: QB C.J. Bailey is an elite, athletic playmaker who elevates the team’s ceiling. However, replacing star RB Hollywood Smothers (transferred to Texas) is a major question mark, and the WR room is dominated by new transfers.
- Defense: The front seven is concerning after ranking 70th in run defense and 65th in pass rush last season, though the secondary remains solid.
- Projected Record: 6-6 overall (4-5 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Non-conference wins over Richmond and App State, with ACC wins against Wake Forest, Cal, Duke, and Syracuse.
#9 Florida State Seminoles
- Coaching & Outlook: Mike Norvell is firmly on the hot seat and taking over play-calling duties. Following Gus Malzahn’s retirement, Tim Harris moves up to OC, while Tony White directs the defense.
- Offense: Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels offers high variance at QB. Playmakers include RB Contravion Wisner and elite WR Deuce Robinson (a top-5 wideout nationally) alongside Makai Danzy. However, the offensive line is comprised entirely of transfer portal additions.
- Defense: Tony White returns 7 starters and added Southern Miss transfer LB Chris Jones (51 tackles, 3.5 sacks).
- Projected Record: 6-6 overall (4-4 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected to shock SMU in Week 1, with additional wins over New Mexico State, Central Arkansas, Virginia, Boston College, and NC State.
#8 Pittsburgh Panthers
- Coaching & Outlook: Pat Narduzzi enters 2026 unbothered by outside pressure, leading a team backed by the easiest conference schedule in the ACC.
- Offense: Retaining star QB Mason Heintschel was Pitt’s biggest offseason win. He runs behind 4 returning OL starters—led by elite OT Ryan Baer—and handoffs go to Ja’Kyiran Turner and La’Vell Wright. Receiver depth remains thin.
- Defense: Lost star LB Rasheem Biles to Texas, but DC Randy Bates returns a settled front seven featuring edges Jimmy Scott and Isaiah Neal, plus LBs Braylan Lovelace and Cameron Lindsay. Cornerback sees a three-way battle between Shadarian Harrison, Shawn Lee Jr., and portal add Raion Strader.
- Projected Record: 8-4 overall (5-4 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Out-of-conference wins over Miami (OH), UCF, and Bucknell, alongside ACC wins over Syracuse, UNC, Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Florida State.
#7 Virginia Cavaliers
- Coaching & Outlook: Tony Elliott oversees the oldest team in the FBS (53 seniors/graduates). Coming off an ACC Championship appearance, Virginia brought in 33 portal additions to backfill roster departures.
- Offense: Penn State transfer Beau Pribula won the QB job over Eli Holstein. The OL returns T McKale Boley and G Drake Metcalf, while Middle Tennessee transfer Ja’Kale Middlebrook and UAB’s Solomon Beebe fill out the backfield. Portal WRs include Jacquon Gibson (UMass), Rico Flores (UCLA), Da’Shawn Martin (Kent State), and Tyson Davis (CMU).
- Defense: Added 7 defensive front transfers—notably Zion Wilson (ECU) and Nnanna Anyanwu (UTSA). LBs Kam Robinson and Maddox Marcellus anchor a secondary-heavy defense.
- Projected Record: 8-4 overall (5-4 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected 4-0 start including a Week 1 win over NC State; additional wins over Norfolk State, West Virginia, Delaware, Syracuse, Duke, Cal, and UNC.
#6 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
- Coaching & Outlook: Brent Key brings in two new coordinators, maintaining high baseline competitiveness despite a monster out-of-conference slate.
- Offense: The backfield is dynamic with Malachi Hosley and Michigan transfer Justice Haynes. Indiana transfer QB Alberto Mendoza is a wait-and-see prospect. Key additions include WR Isaiah Fuhrmann (Elon) and TE Gavin Harris (New Mexico State).
- Defense: Loaded secondary and linebacking groups featuring E.J. Lightsey, Kyle Efford, Cayman Spaulding, Melvin Jordan, Jonas Duclona, Zach Tobe, Kelvin Hill, Alabama transfer Jaylen Mbakwe, and star safety Tae Harris.
- Projected Record: 7-5 overall (5-3 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Statement conference upset over Louisville in Week 10, with additional wins over Colorado, Mercer, Stanford, Duke, Boston College, and Wake Forest.
#5 Virginia Tech Hokies
- Coaching & Outlook: James Franklin ushers in a new era (“We won the offseason, now we have to go win games”). He brought back former VT head coach Brent Pry as defensive coordinator and reunites with Ty Howle as first-time OC.
- Offense: Penn State transfer Ethan Grunkemeyer takes over at QB. Marcellous Hawkins and Louisiana transfer Bill Davis form a strong 1-2 backfield punch. WR Que’Sean Brown (Duke) pairs with Ayden Greene, while TE Luke Reynolds (Penn State) stands out. 4 OL starters return.
- Defense: Loaded transfer front featuring returners Kemari Copeland and Elhadj Fall, Samuel Okunlola (Colorado), and Penn State transfers Mylachi Williams, Cortez Harris, and Keon Wylie. Troy transfer Jarquez White and UConn transfer Cam Chadwick reinforce the secondary.
- Projected Record: 9-3 overall (6-3 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Sweep of non-conference play (VMI, ODU, Maryland) and ACC wins over Boston College, Pitt, Cal, Georgia Tech, Stanford, and Virginia.
#4 SMU Mustangs
- Coaching & Outlook: Rhett Lashlee replaced both coordinators, but the Mustangs boast one of the most talent-rich rosters in the conference.
- Offense: Led by QB Kevin Jennings, SMU added Cal RB transfer Kendrick Raphael, ECU WR Yannick Smith, and tight ends Randy Pittman (FSU) and Theo Melin Öhrström (Texas A&M).
- Defense: Transfer additions include CB Jayven Thomas (Texas A&M), EDGE Marques White (UMass), EDGE Ira Singleton (USF), CB Jarvis Lee (USF), and Safety Jimmy Wyrick (UTSA).
- Projected Record: 9-3 overall (7-2 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: ACC wins over Boston College, Virginia, Cal, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Stanford.
#3 Clemson Tigers
- Coaching & Outlook: Dabo Swinney goes “go big or go home,” bringing Chad Morris out of retirement as OC and relying on Tom Allen to overhaul the defense.
- Offense: Christopher Vizzina is expected to hold off freshman Tait Reynolds at QB, but that battle is still yet to be settled. SMU transfer RB Chris Johnson Jr. pairs with returner Gideon Davidson. T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. form arguably the best WR duo in the ACC.
- Defense: Front seven features LB Sammy Brown, EDGE Will Heldt, DT Markus Strong (Oklahoma), Jaheim Lawson, Kobe McCloud, and Jeremiah Alexander. Secondary is reinforced by Elliot Washington (Penn State), Donovan Starr (Auburn), Corey Myrick (Southern Miss), and Jerome Carter (ODU).
- Projected Record: 10-2 overall (7-1 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Only projected losses come at LSU (Week 1) and home vs. Miami (Week 5).
#2 Louisville Cardinals
- Coaching & Outlook: Coming off a 9-4 season (4-4 ACC), Jeff Brohm reloaded through the transfer portal to build an ACC Championship contender.
- Offense: Ohio State transfer QB Lincoln Kienholz takes over as starter (backed up by West Georgia transfer Davin Wydner: 1,672 pass yds, 15 TDs, 441 rush yds). Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown return alongside Mizzou RB transfer Marquise Davis. WR additions include Tre Richardson (Vanderbilt: 810 yds, 7 TDs, 17+ YPC), Lawayne McCoy (FSU), and Jackson Voth (Drake). Brody Foley (Tulsa: 528 yds, 9 TDs) leads the TEs. The rebuilt OL features Johnnie Brown III, Eryx Daugherty, Cason Henry, Anwar O’Neal, and Evan Wibberley.
- Defense: Clev Lubin bypassed the NFL Draft to partner with A.J. Green and UNC transfer Tyler Thompson on the edge. Iowa captain Koen Entringer (73 tackles, All-Big Ten) reinforces the secondary.
- Projected Record: 10-2 overall (8-1 ACC).
- Notable Matchups: Projected wins over SMU, Wake Forest, NC State, FSU, Syracuse, Stanford, UNC, Pitt, and Kentucky, sending them to the ACC Championship Game.
#1 Miami Hurricanes
- Coaching & Outlook: Fresh off a 13-3 season and a National Championship Game appearance, Mario Cristobal’s squad possesses the premier roster in the ACC.
- Offense: Upgraded at QB with Duke transfer Darien Mensah (3,973 yds, 34 TDs, 6 INTs). He brings Duke teammate Cooper Barkate (72 rec, 1,106 yds, 7 TDs), joined by Vandrevius Jacobs (South Carolina), Cam Vaughn (WVU), returning star Malachi Toney (1,211 yds, 10 TDs), and RB Mark Fletcher Jr. (1,192 yds, 12 TDs). Despite returning just 22% OL production, 5-star freshman Jackson Cantwell starts at left tackle alongside Georgia transfer Jamal Meriweather and ETSU transfer Johnathan Cline.
- Defense: Returns 66% defensive production (ranked #1 in pass rush, 10th in run efficiency). Highlights include Missouri transfer EDGE Damon Wilson II (9 sacks), Boston College transfer Safety Omar Thornton (82 tackles, 8 TFL, 4 FF), and interior DL transfers Jarquez Carter (Ohio State) and Keona Davis (Ohio).
- Projected Record: 11-1 overall (9-0 ACC).
- ACC Championship Outcome: Miami runs the conference slate undefeated, defeats Louisville in the ACC Championship Game to secure their first-ever ACC title, and earns a spot in the College Football Playoff.
