College Career

Tyrell Shavers, a four-star recruit, first committed and played for the prestigious Alabama Crimson Tide in 2018 and 2019, and transferred after having limited playing time in Bama. He played for Mississippi State in 2020, also having limited stats. 2021, he would transfer again, believing in himself and his ability.

Arriving at San Diego State, it was an uphill battle, and he still wasn’t putting up the stats that his skill reflected. In 2022, his final season, he left it all on the table, rep after rep. He would go on to have his best season with 38 receptions, for 643 yards and 3 TDs, and proceeded to enter the NFL draft.

A Call From 716

Although undrafted, his skills were enough for GM Brandon Beane and HC Sean McDermott to sign him after the 2023 NFL draft. Last season was a quiet one for Shavers as he maintained his position on the Bills’ practice squad throughout the last two seasons, many expecting him to remain in the same role for 2025. Tyrell Shavers was not one of those people.

He believed in himself and kept putting in the work, kept grinding day after day, and produced not just one, but two incredible highlights in a limited preseason role. Shaver’s ability to stretch the field and be a redzone threat are things the Bills front office has been looking for quite some time, and it appears Shaver can be that guy. While 2nd round pick Keon Coleman is a great red zone threat himself, he does lack the ability to stretch the field with his speed.

RedZone Threat

While Tyrell Shavers has had an up-and-down career from college to the NFL, he carries himself with confidence, something you love to see out of young prospects. Shavers still finds himself as WR6 on the depth chart, and while making the roster itself was a major goal, he must raise the bar if he wishes to see significant playing time.

Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman will almost always be on the field with Joshua Palmer in the slot. With that being said, HC Sean McDermott has placed Shakir in the slot for several plays last season, and if we look at the Bills’ depth, Elijah Moore and Curtis Samuel are quality receivers, but they aren’t redzone threats by any means. This is where I envision Shaver’s role being.

Any redzone play that sees Shakir in the Slot, I can see Palmer being subbed out to get a favorable size and speed mismatch on the outside with Shavers and Coleman on opposite sides. This gives MVP QB Josh Allen the most optimal redzone offense he’s had in his career. Even in 4 WR sets, Shavers can remain on the outside with his deep threat abilities, though Elijah Moore is likely in that role for now.

Expectations

Tyrell Shavers will likely play in a very limited role with this being his first season the the Bills’ 53-man roster. I predict he has 8 receptions for 205 yards, 2 TDs. One of these TDs can easily be a Hail Mary, but I truly believe we will see him in the red zone many times this year. Hopefully, it pans out for Shavers as he’s worked hard for this moment, and he capitalizes es it while he has all the momentum.
