The Arizona Cardinals have fired coach Jonathan Gannon. His stint in Arizona ends after three seasons and a 15-36 record, including 19 losses in the last 24 games.
Nightmare in the Desert
Year three under Jonathan Gannon got off to a fast start. The team started 2-0 for the first time in four years. However, the season went south quickly. The Arizona Cardinals went on to lose 14 of their final 15 games, finishing the year with a 3-14 record. Their 14 losses are the most in a single season in franchise history.
The Cardinals were not competitive down the stretch, ending the season on a nine-game losing streak. They were outscored 317-175 in those games.
“This is a league about wins and losses. The wins and losses speak for themselves, especially this year,” Owner Michael Bidwill said Monday. “We just felt like we were going in the wrong direction and we needed to change course.”
During his time in Arizona, Jonathan Gannon was unable to solve the NFC West. He was winless against the division in two of his three seasons as head coach. Gannon concludes his tenure with a 3-15 record against divisional opponents.
The Process Begins
General Manager Monti Ossenfort will lead the search for a new head coach. “None of us expected to be here today. We didn’t,” Ossenfort said. “It’s not just one thing. There’s a lot of things we have to get moving in the right direction, and that process starts today.”
Michael Bidwill is aiming for a “quick turnaround,” emphasizing that they want to win sooner rather than later.
“Those teams with new coaches from a year or two ago are now in the playoffs, playing this weekend. I know we can turn it around,” said Bidwill. “I’m looking forward to getting going with this search. It’s going to be a great opportunity for us to be that next story where we flip it around.”
