This coming Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers—like the league’s other 31 teams—will be poised to strike deals and sign checks in pursuit of a Lombardi trophy. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, free agency is almost here. Well, technically, it doesn’t start until Wednesday, but teams will start negotiating deals on Monday.
The Chargers wasted no time in bolstering their line before Monday, as they have just signed Tyler Biadasz to a 3-year, $30 million deal. Even with this signing, the Chargers should still look to add quality depth to the offensive line.
Looking at how their season ended last year, there’s one big hole that needs to be addressed: keep Justin Herbert upright. Herbert was sacked 54 times last season and hit 129 times, the most of any other quarterback. Following the retirement of Bradley Bozeman, the possibility of losing Zion Johnson, and the release of Mekhi Becton (which can’t be official until the new league year starts next Wednesday), the interior line is set to look much different next season. Here are some of the available free agents I believe should be on their target list to revamp the interior:
Joel Bitonio
Bitonio is on the backend of his career, but he brings proven veteran experience. A one-year deal makes sense, allowing a rookie to learn behind him should the Chargers draft someone come April. This gives the Chargers leadership and time to develop new talent. Seems like everyone wins in this situation.
Evan Neal
Neal struggled with the Giants, but as a depth piece, he could add flexibility for the Chargers. He’s played tackle and some guard, making him a useful backup if the team brings him in. A change of scenery might be what he needs to revive his young career.
Isaac Seumalo
Seumalo, turning 33 this season, remains a reliable, respected guard. He can start immediately and improve the Chargers’ line, making a 2-year, $20 million deal good value based on his consistent past performance with the Steelers and Eagles. A proven starter who would be a great asset in protecting Justin Herbert.
Alijah Vera-Tucker
Ok, just hear me out. Vera-Tucker’s market is down due to a triceps injury, but he has two full seasons as a starter and aims to prove he can return to form. It’s in Joe Hortiz’s best interest to continue to build the depth after last year. Vera-Tucker gives you that option. He’s also a young player in this league, so there’s also a chance he can be back next year if he does well in 2026.
