The Tennessee Volunteers dominated national headlines after securing five-star running back David Gabriel Georges on Wednesday. Gabriel Georges is Josh Heupel’s third-highest-rated recruit since joining Tennessee, according to 247Sports. He’s also the most highly-touted running back recruit Heupel will have coached since Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma.
Although Tennessee is known for its quarterback play, the Vols have quietly possessed one of the most dominant rushing attacks in the SEC. Over the past five seasons, the Volunteers have led the conference with an average of 204.4 rushing yards per game. During that span, Tennessee has had three consecutive seasons with 1,000-yard rushers.
That list includes players such as 2024 SEC Offensive Player of the Year Dylan Sampson, who broke school single-season records for rushing yards (1,491) and rushing touchdowns (22). Additionally, Tennessee’s current starting running back, DeSean Bishop, finished fourth in the SEC in rushing yards (1,076) and tied for second in rushing touchdowns (16) in 2025.
So, what could Gabriel Georges’ future look like for the Volunteers?

Considering Tennessee’s recent dominance in the running game, it’s not far-fetched to think Gabriel Georges could potentially become one of the greatest running backs to ever play in Knoxville. Heupel has never had a running back of Gabriel Georges’ caliber. The star running back’s impact has already been showcased through the Vols’ 2027 recruiting class, which rose from No. 38 to No. 24 in 247Sports’ rankings after Gabriel Georges’ commitment.
Sampson didn’t even become a full-time starter at Tennessee until his junior year in 2024, and he broke a litany of school records, as mentioned. This will not be the case for Gabriel Georges. The expectation is that he will be a starter as soon as he arrives in Knoxville in 2027. The Volunteers’ current starting running back, Bishop, has already alluded to leaving for the NFL draft after the 2026 season. So, this opens the door for Gabriel Georges to have an immediate impact.
Gabriel Georges was reportedly guaranteed an NIL deal in the ballpark of $2 million per year, along with immediate playing time. So, it is clear that the Volunteers hold him in high regard. If Sampson could break all of those records in one year as a starter, imagine what Gabriel Georges could achieve with at least three seasons under his belt.

Gabriel Georges is listed at 5-foot-11, 220 pounds, according to On3. He is a consensus five-star running back and the No. 2 running back in the country, according to 247Sports. The bruising running back has won the Tennessee Mr. Football Award in each of the past two seasons (2024 and 2025) at Baylor School in Chattanooga.
During those two seasons, Gabriel Georges rushed for a total of 2,829 yards and 41 touchdowns, according to On3. As a junior in 2025, he rushed for 1,749 yards while averaging 10.9 yards per carry and scored 27 touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. During that same season, he won a state championship over Brentwood Academy and was named the game’s MVP. He also had a 280-yard performance that year, scoring a staggering seven touchdowns in one game.
On X, there are videos of him performing a 725-pound deadlift, a 600-pound squat, and a 375-pound bench press. He also clocked a 4.38-second 40-yard dash.
What to Expect on the Field
Gabriel Georges’ 220-pound frame allows him to shed tackles with ease. There are several highlights of him breaking at least three tackles on a single play. Not only is he a powerful back, but he also possesses elite elusiveness. There are several plays in which he makes a cut on a dime. The most interesting part about his juking ability is the fact that he doesn’t seem to lose speed.
Although there aren’t many highlights of him catching the football, he is still a threat to take it to the house every time the ball is in his hands. He has several plays in which he has run for 40-plus yards, resulting in a touchdown. Once he makes a juke or breaks a tackle, it appears that no one can catch up to him.

By the time he arrives at Tennessee, he will have two five-star offensive tackles in David Sanders Jr. and Gabriel Osenda blocking for him. These blockers will be pivotal in catering to Gabriel Georges’ needs, considering he routinely takes plays to the outside.
Gabriel Georges also has impeccable reaction time. There are multiple examples of a defensive lineman getting into his backfield as soon as Gabriel Georges receives the handoff, and what does he do? He recognizes the defender immediately and makes a cut almost instantly, which usually results in a run of more than 15 yards.
It is uncertain whether Gabriel Georges can replicate this type of dominance in the SEC, but at the end of the day, he is a five-star for a reason.
