With week zero a week away, it is time to break down the Atlantic Coast Conference 1-16. From key players, stars returning, and teams biggest questions heading into the 2026-2027 season.
1. Miami (FL) Hurricanes: 7-1 Title Favorite
Ranked number 6th in my preseason Top 25, The Canes seemed to possible reload for another shot at the title this year.
⭐ Key player: QB Darian Mensah — transfer from Duke; named ACC Preseason Player of the Year.
🔥 Star returner: WR Malachi Toney — preseason First-Team All-American.
💪 Also back: RB Mark Fletcher Jr. 👀
Newcomer to watch: Darian Mensah QB
Team outlook: Elite offense / championship-level roster
Big question: Can Mensah immediately replace the production of Carson Beck?
2. SMU Mustangs: 7-1: CFP Contender
The Mustangs are ranked 13th on my Preseason Poll, With Kevin Jennings back it seems like the Mustangs are a threat to make the CFP again possibly.
⭐ Key player: QB Kevin Jennings
💪 Major returner: OT PJ Williams — preseason Second-Team All-American.
🔥 Key RB: Kendrick Raphael
Newcomers: Multiple transfer additions at WR, TE and along the defensive line.
Team outlook: Very strong offense / questions on defense
Big question: Can the revamped defense keep SMU in the CFP conversation?
3. Louisville Cardinals: 6-2: Championship Threat
Louisville is the last ACC Team I have in my Preseason Top 25 poll at 18. I think Louisville in the next year or two could be in the SMU type of contender but I think for now it a good stepping stone for them.
Key player: RB Isaac Brown 👀
New QB: Lincoln Kienholz — Ohio State transfer.
Newcomer: S Koen Entringer — Iowa transfer and former all-conference player.
Team outlook: Explosive backfield / secondary being rebuilt
Big question: Can the new QB and secondary pieces take Louisville from contender to champion?
4. Clemson Tigers: 6-2: Bounce Back Contenders
I think I’m high on Clemson than most because Dabo Swinney is a great coach and I think he can turn this team around into the top dog of the ACC we saw for years.
⭐ Key player: LB Sammy Brown
👀 QB situation: Christopher Vizzina expected to take over with limited starting experience.
💪 Defense: Brown gives them an elite defensive centerpiece.
Team outlook: High-end defense / QB uncertainty
Big question: Can Vizzina keep Clemson in the title race?
5. Georgia Tech: 5-3: Dark Horse
- ⭐ Key player: K Aidan Birr
- 🔥 Preseason All-American: Birr earned Third-Team honors.
- Team outlook: Dangerous dark horse
- Big question: Can Tech turn its consistency into a legitimate ACC title push?
6. Virginia: 5-3: Rising Contender
I think Tony Elliot is building something special and I think it is only going up from here.
- ⭐ Key storyline: Experienced roster trying to push into the ACC’s upper tier.
- Team outlook: Balanced / potential sleeper
- Big question: Can Virginia beat the teams ahead of them and crash the championship race?
7. NC State: 5-3: Dangerous Sleeper
How high of a ceiling does the Wolfpack have in 2026, with star quarterback CJ Bailey returning?
- ⭐ Key player: QB CJ Bailey

- Team outlook: QB-driven offense / potential breakout
- Big question: Is Bailey good enough to carry NC State into the top four?
8. Virginia Tech: 4-4: Wild Card
James Franklin is a good coach and took Penn State to 10 wins ever year. I think Franklin is the perfect fit for them, just don’t think year one it perfect, but a step in the right direction.
- ⭐ Key player: QB Ethan Grunkemeyer
- 👀 Newcomer: Transfer QB from Penn State.
- 🔥 Already has major ACC experience after last year’s win over Clemson.
- Team outlook: High-upside QB / developing roster
- Big question: Can Grunkemeyer make the Hokies a legitimate contender?
9. Pitt: 4-4: Bowl Contender
- ⭐ Storyline: Potential middle-of-the-pack team with enough talent to play spoiler.
- Team outlook: Volatile / dangerous at home
- Big question: Can Pitt steal a couple games from the ACC contenders?
10. Duke: 4-4: Defending Championship Wildcard
I can see this team being top 4 in the standings by the end of this year or at the bottom. Manny Diaz has done a great job at Duke, thing is they loss at a lot of talent to Miami or in general.
- ⭐ Major loss: Darian Mensah transferred to Miami.
- 👀 QB battle: Walker Eget vs. Dan Mahan.
- Team outlook: Major QB transition
- Big question: Can Duke stay competitive after losing its starting QB?
11. Florida State: 4-4: Bounce Back Contender
With beating Alabama last year the signs are there that the Noles could be back. Question is can it all come together for the Noles.
- ⭐ Key player: WR Duce Robinson
- 🔥 Preseason First-Team All-American.
- Team outlook: Offensive playmaker gives them upset potential.
- Big question: Can FSU get back into the ACC title conversation?
12. California: 3-5: Potential Spoiler
With buzz around Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (JKS), The Golden bears can play Spoiler in the ACC, now can he make the next step is another thing.
- ⭐ Key player: QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele
- 💪 Coming off a huge freshman season with 3,454 passing yards.
- Team outlook: QB gives Cal legitimate upset potential.
- Big question: Can JKS take the next step under the new coaching staff?
13. Wake Forest: 3-5: Work in Progress
Wake Forest is in the “rebuilding” faze where it won’t be pretty but you want some good signs through this year.
- ⭐ Special teams weapon: Carlos Hernandez
- 🔥 Preseason All-American return specialist.
- Team outlook: Dangerous special teams / rebuilding elsewhere
- Big question: Can Wake manufacture enough explosive plays?
14. Syracuse: 3-5: Rebuilding
Now I live around the Syracuse area so the hype around this team is odd. In theory it should be better that they will have Steve Angeli back… But maybe even if Steve was going to be healthy, the Orange are not that good.
- ⭐ QB: Steve Angeli
- 👀 Newcomer: DL Tunmise Adeleye — UNLV transfer.
- 🔥 Adeleye has reportedly emerged as a major force in camp.
- Team outlook: Defense could outperform expectations.
- Big question: Can Syracuse survive a brutal schedule?
15. North Carolina: 2-6: Biggest Question Mark
This Team will most likely get the most coverage, due to the Head Coach and off the field issues that you can google yourself. But can Bill shape the tarheels up into something..
- ⭐ Storyline: Talented enough to be dangerous but needs consistency.
- Team outlook: Wild card
- Big question: Can UNC turn its talent into wins?
16. Boston College: 2-6: Rebuild
Can a bunch of transfer stabilize this program that has not been good in a long long time.
- ⭐ Key returner: RB Evan Dickens
- 👀 New QB: Mason McKenzie.
- 🔄 Significant roster turnover, including only one returning offensive-line starter.
- Team outlook: Rebuild
- Big question: Can the transfer-heavy roster stabilize quickly?
17. Stanford: 1-7: Long Shot
Andrew Luck has his luck cut out for him. Finally got the coach he wants and not with a young team have a lot of growing pains, to hopefully turn into gold.
- ⭐ Storyline: Developmental roster
- Team outlook: Long shot
- Big question: Can Stanford develop enough young talent to compete in the ACC?
