The New England Patriots handed the Buffalo Bills their first loss of the season, ending their early hopes of having a perfect season. This win also keeps the Patriots’ hopes of a division title in reach, as they’ll hold the head-to-head tiebreaker until Buffalo comes to Foxborough in week 15.
Game Recap
Buffalo failed to get momentum during Sunday night’s matchup as multiple turnovers led to a New England upset, as the Patriots won with a late field goal. The Patriots’ defense held James Cook to his first game under 50 total yards this season, which was a major part of their victory, as Buffalo’s run game has dominated every opponent thus far. It wasn’t just the Patriots’ defense that dominated Buffalo, as Stefon Diggs made his revenge felt throughout Bills Mafia.
My Player of the Game
Stefon Diggs was the shining light in the Patriots’ offense as he single-handedly carried the offense Sunday with 10 receptions for 146 yards in his first game against Buffalo since his departure following the 2023 season, where he was traded to the Houston Texans but was injured and missed the Texans-Bills matchup last season.
New Threat To Buffalo?
Outside of the division, the entire AFC seems to be up for grabs with the Baltimore Ravens falling to 1-4, the Kansas City Chiefs being 2-3, and the Bengals, without Joe Burrow, are also 2-3. All of which is good news for Buffalo because, despite a loss on Sunday, they remain 2 games ahead of what many consider to be the biggest threats to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. But what if the Ravens, Chiefs, and, as expected with Burrow’s injury, the Bengals, are all hovering around .500 at the end of the season? Who’s really the biggest threat to Buffalo right now?
My answer may surprise you, but the Indianapolis Colts play like a fine-tuned Titans team when they had Derrick Henry. Jonathan Taylor is having another elite season, and the Colts aren’t afraid the rely on him through the entirety of a game. Daniel Jones is good enough to efficiently run the passing game, much like Ryan Tannehill was on the Titans.
The Bills are 1st in offensive yards in the AFC with 395.8 per game, the Colts are 2nd with 381.2. The Colts are 1st in points per game in the AFC (32.6), the Bills are 2nd with 30.6. Combine this with the fact that the Colts are 3rd in the entire NFL among points allowed (17.8), and they are legitimate threats to play spoiler in January.
Matt Milanos Return
Matt Milano‘s first game back since week 2 was as you’d expect from the veteran linebacker. Head Coach Sean McDermott had Milano on a snap count that saw him play 53% of snaps, in which he had 6 tackles. I expect Milano to be off a snap count if he has no setbacks during practice this week, as we head to Atlanta for another primetime matchup.
Upcoming Schedule
The Bills have a stretch of away games throughout the remainder of October, first being this Monday for another primetime matchup at 7:15 pm EST, followed by our week 7 bye week. In week 8, Buffalo travels to Carolina to take on the young QB in Bryce Young. Finally, week 9, Buffalo is back at home to take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
