Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets Week 2 Preview

The 1-0 Buffalo Bills head to East Rutherford, NJ, for their first away game of the season, where they will face off against the 0-1 New York Jets. Despite the Jets’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 1, both teams are coming off impressive, electrifying offensive performances and look to set the tone in the AFC East.

A Breakout Continued

Keon Coleman, as expected, had an incredible game against the elite Baltimore Ravens defense. He had 8 receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown. It will be interesting to see how HC Aaron Glenn and the Jets scheme for Coleman while having a less impressive secondary. If Sauce Gardner is matched up against Khalil Shakir, expect Coleman to continue his dominating performance.

Can Buffalo’s Defense Rebound?

After getting slaughtered through three quarters, the Bills’ defense finally put an end to King Henry’s reign, but is it enough for a fresh start in New Jersey? Buffalo has shown time and time again that it cannot stop the run. With that being said, Breece Hall just had a great performance last week vs the Steelers with 145 total yards. Hall isn’t the only runner HC Sean McDermott and the Bills defense need to worry about, as Justin Fields ran for 2 TDs.

The pro side of playing the Jets right now is that we just played the most mobile QB in the league and won, Justin Fields is arguably the 2nd most mobile QB, and if we can contain him the way we contained Lamar Jackson in the 4th quarter, Fields will be looking at having a not-so-great week 2.

A Tale of Injuries

Focusing now on who will suit up for Buffalo, there are some injuries, most notably, Ed Oliver is missing time with an ankle injury and has been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup. This comes as a shock since Oliver is typically one of the healthiest Bills defenders in recent years, but it’s time to question the training staff in Buffalo. How is it every single season we have countless injuries on the defensive side of the ball? It’s rarely on offense *Knock on wood*. Tre’Davious White has been injured time and time again, Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Matt Milano; it’s always key pieces on our defense. The training staff needs a better technique for aging players.

In Or Out

I’m going to randomize 3 numbers on Google and match them to the jersey number on the current 53-man roster and tell you whether or not I am in or out on them based on week 1!

  • #39 CB Cam Lewis: This is a tough one to start, as Lewis failed to record any stats in week 1. It is alarming that he was unable to beat out rookie 6th round pick Dorian Strong for the CB5 role, which inevitably started week 1 due to injuries to Maxwell Hairston and Tre’Davious White. Lewis seems to be the last CB on the Bills depth chart and could very well be spending his last season in Buffalo, so I’m out on Cam Lewis and don’t expect him to play much, if at all, vs the Jets.
  • #29 KR/PR Brandon Codrington: As a return man, he’s the only player on the Bills roster I am confident in returning kicks. In week 1, Codrington had 5 kick returns for 139 yards averaging 27.8 yards per return. This marks him as 4th on kick return yards and 14th on the average. He certainly can break one free and turn a game around, and I expect him to do so in the coming weeks. I’m all in with Codrington returning kicks.
  • #97 EDGE Joey Bosa: Bosa came into this game needing to make an impact and solidify himself in this Buffalo defense. It was scary at times seeing him unable to cover the read option as he allowed Lamar Jackson to run to the outside on more than one occasion. However, in the second half, Bosa adjusted himself and took the outside away from Jackson, forcing him to cut back inside, and it allowed the defense to stop Jackson’s dominating performance and turned the game around. It will be interesting to see if Bosa can disrupt Fields’ ability to run the ball the same way he did to Jackson in the 4th. If Bosa can continue to make an impact and stay healthy, then I’m in on Bosa this season.
