For years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities have produced elite talent. HBCU athletes have to scratch and claw for their opportunity to get recognized and have a chance to receive the recognition they rightfully deserve. 1st Team All-Conference tight end Kameron King is another worthy candidate ready to prove that HBCU athletes are among the most elite athletes at the highest level. After a standout career, the versatile playmaker is taking his talents to the 2025 NFL Draft. Kameron is determined to showcase his skills and prove that HBCU athletes can thrive at the next level!

Building a Brotherhood: Kameron King opted into Fayetteville State not solely because of football, but also for the unity, culture, and brotherhood.

“Being an HBCU athlete has helped me understand our culture even more off the field. When it comes to being on the field, having each other’s back is everything.” – King

Having such a strong sense of unity has boosted Kameron’s morale and competitive spirit. This competitive spirit has shaped him into a relentless competitor who turned into a fearless leader who takes pride in uplifting his teammates. While the terrain has built King up, Kameron also took time to acknowledge the struggles that come with being an HBCU athlete.

“I think we are underestimated, to be honest. Most guys come from PWI schools, and we might lack some things in terms of equipment or staff, there are absolute dogs in HBCU’s.” – King

Versatility and Football IQ: At 6’3 and 238 pounds, King possesses the physical tools that NFL teams crave. While King’s size is appealing, what truly sets him apart is his humble beginnings and intelligence behind his wide frame.

” I think my versatility and football IQ separate me from other tight ends in this draft. I was previously a wide receiver, so I understand defensive coverages and how defenses flow” – King explained.

The transition from wide receiver to tight end has given him a unique edge. His ability to create mismatches, exploit soft spots in coverage and read defenses makes him a nightmare for defenses.

Mastering the Blend of Run Blocking and Route Running: One of the major adjustments receivers transitioning into tight ends adapt to is embracing the physicality of run blocking. While this may be a building block for many, King has embraced and thrived in both aspects of his new position.

“Everyone plays at a high level, so working at my technique in both routes and blocking is essential on a play-to-play basis,” – King

King’s dedication and determination to balance these mandatory aspects of his position is what truly makes him a deadly dual-threat at the tight-end position. Whether Kameron is breaking free down the field on seam routes or sealing the edge during the run game, his approach is dominant while also methodical and calculated as well.

NFL Role Models and Playstyle Comparisons: When asked who he models his game after, King specifically named a slew of elite, game-changing tight ends.

“A writer compared me to Gerald Everett, but I say I model my game after Travis Kelce and Jonnu Smith because of their yards-after-catch ability, which I believe is a strong part of my game.”

King’s yard-after-catch ability is what makes him such an intriguing prospect. His history of being a wide receiver has made him comfortable with shedding defenders, making plays in space, and making explosive plays.

Turning Heads- HBCU Legacy Bowl and NFL Attention: Scouts have already taken notice of Kameron King after his dominating performance at the HBCU Legacy Bowl. The Detroit Lions were front and center as King dominated the competition and he showcased his skill against other elite HBCU talent.

I spoke to a scout from the Lions last week during my bowl, and he basically said he liked my game during practice #2 of the week.” – King revealed

Recognition like this from NFL scouts is uplifting and motivating for HBCU athletes, there is an uphill battle to have eyes placed on them despite their overflowing talent and Kameron King is doing his part to represent the HBCU community.

Misconceptions About HBCU Athletes: One of the biggest motivations King uses to grind so hard is to shatter the false narratives that are pushed about HBCU football.

” The misconception is that we are not good enough, but there are dogs in HBCU’s” – King

Kameron King’s relentless work ethic and flawless performance on the field show his determination to prove that talent will be found no matter where you are.

Most Memorable College Football Moment: Reflecting on his rewarding journey, King pointed to his first-ever college football game as the most memorable moment in his successful career.

“My favorite moment has to be the first time I got in as a freshman at my previous school Shorter University against ETSU”

That moment set the stage for a career filled with resilience, dedication, and undeniable talent.

Aspiring Legacy: As King embarks on the stage of his bright story, he wants to be an inspiration to others.

“If I can, you can! With minimal oppourtunities, just make the best of it.” – King

This mindset embodies everything that Kameron King stands for- A relentless warrior who refuses to be outshined. With the 2025 NFL Draft approaching quickly, King is ready to show the world that HBCU athletes can thrive at the highest level.
