Is Justin Fields Hurt?
The New York Jets’ 2025 season started off on the right foot this offseason with no extra extracurricular noise as as well as a positive discourse around the building franchise. This disaster of a franchise for the last 15 years has needed a silent off-season, and they got it with new head coach Aaron Glenn. This morning, the second day of training camp, we got word that newly signed quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field. The ominous report this morning. had fans surprised, but at the same time, there was a similar feeling for the often-cursed fan base.
Fields dislocated his toe. The toe is not the big toe and is one of the toes on the inside. Jets camp has said that this is not a major injury, and he is said to have avoided missing serious time. I worry about the length he will miss as we are only six weeks away from New York’s opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The time that Fields misses is crucial in his development within a new offense and system that he will be a part of. Fields is now a part of his third team in three years. He is the rare case, along with Baker Mayfield, of a top pick getting real chances at a starting spot as well as real money after it has failed with multiple franchises previously.
Fields needs to gain chemistry with Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson for both of their fantasy values to rise. We have seen him have great chemistry with a #1 Reciver before in DJ Moore in Chicago. This is one of the reasons that there is excitement in the fantasy community for Fields.
Keeping an eye on his time missed will be crucial for me heading into peak drafting season over the next month. The Jets QB depth chart is very shallow as well. Tyrod Taylor, 35, is second on the depth chart right now. A once-coveted backup is heading towards the end of his career, and the excitement around him to maintain an offense is nearly nonexistent.
Rankings Impact
Justin Fields
Fields is currently a fringe QB one in most drafts. Like I said before, the excitement around him is quite high, and I would expect that to continue if he only misses a week to ten days. In my rankings, he will stay a fringe QB1, but if he does not come back within the next ten days to training camp, that will be a red flag for me in draft season, and I will have to pay very close attention to reports out of Jets’ camp and into the preseason. Fields earned himself a high-dollar contract through continued progress and successes, but we should see him play a quarter or three throughout the preseason. If he misses more than my designated ten days, those are must-watch snaps for me to determine his fantasy value.
Reaction: Hold the line… For now.
Garrett Wilson
There is reasonable concern as well as excitement for Garrett Wilson heading into 2025. He is a player I have had trouble ranking over the past few seasons. His quarterback situation was not ideal two seasons ago, and last year, he had Aaron Rodgers‘ favorite target in front of him halfway through the season. This may be his most favorable situation yet… which is exciting, but also scary. Although it is believed that Fields avoided major injury this morning, it is a scary thought for Wilson managers to think of a world where Tyrod Taylor or Adrian Martinez is the one passing to Garrett Wilson. If there is another injury, what does it look like for Wilson? He will become a WR3 most likely, and that is not a place we would like to be on Garrett Wilson in 2025.
I am tabling the concern for Garrett Wilson for now, but he may drop a few spots in my rankings now that a Fields injury and the possibility of a future injury have come into the zeitgeist.
Reaction: Concern for Garrett Wilson has risen because of Justin Fields’ injury. Chemistry within a new offense for both of these players is important. They are also new teammates. I am monitoring this situation closely as more major drafts start happening.
