The New York Mets have made their first move towards being competitive in 2027. They have promoted interim manager Andy Green to full-time manager. This move came as a bit of a shock to many, as Green went on record earlier in the season saying he wasn’t interested in the job. He would fill the role for the rest of the season but would return to the front office when the season was over. So his taking the job before the season ended was a bit of a surprise. But is this the right move for the Mets?
Can Andy Green bring the Mets back to Contention?
Since Green took over for Carlos Mendoza, the Mets have gone 37-38. This was a little better than the 34-37 record Mendoza led them to before. However, the Mets have played very well since the trade deadline. After a fire sale that sent eight major league players away, the Mets have gone 19-12. They did so with a far less talented roster, against some of the league’s better teams. It wasn’t an easy task, and a big reason was Green’s management.
Instead of the hands-off, relaxed approach Mendoza took, Green was more hands-on. He may not have been an over-exaggerated guy, but he led with respect. He listened to the player and made decisions based on the situation and how the player was feeling. This was much better than Mendoza’s more conservative, analytically based approach. This helped him quickly earn the locker room’s trust and respect. It gave the team the leadership it desperately needed.
Green was also a large reason why the young players on the roster have played so well. Before he was a manager, he was the Senior Vice President of Player Development. Guys like Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, and Nolan McLean have all credited him with their success. With these guys being a big part of the Mets’ future, plus other young promising players on their way up, having Green at the helm will be huge for their development. Green can help them make the adjustments needed to translate to the big leagues.
He also just does all the little things right. He communicates well with the media, which is a huge bonus in a media market like New York. All in all, Green seems like the perfect manager for the Mets’ future. Time will tell, but so far, he seems like the right guy to lead this team.
