Cowboys’ Ferguson Extended; Micah Next?

Congratulations are in order.

On July 27th, 2025, the Dallas Cowboys extended star TE Jake Ferguson, inking him to a 4-year, $52 million contract that makes him the highest-paid TE in franchise history.

Jake had his best season to date in 2023, orchestrating a Pro-Bowl year while turning 71 receptions into 761 yards & 5 end zone trips. He routinely made plays & quickly became one of Dak‘s favorite targets. The injury bug bit the Cowboys roster in 2024, with Prescott being one of its victims. As a result, Fergy’s production declined to 494 yards on 59 catches. No endzone reservations were booked.

Now coming into the 2025 season with a new contract, new weapons on offense that should open up things for himself as well as his skill position mates, Ferguson looks poised to bounce back & author another productive campaign. The lingering question now is:

Is Micah next?

All offseason the top story in Big D has been the upcoming contract extension for one Micah Parsons. In four seasons since being drafted 12th overall out of Penn State, #11 has never missed the Pro-Bowl, never had a season without double digit sacks, & has only missed an All-Pro team once, that being this past season.

Listing those stats would make you think an extension would already be done right?

Wrong.

While an extension will inevitably be reached with one of the league’s premier players regardless of position, Jerry Jones is up to his old tricks.

It’s become commonplace for the Cowboys owner to delay signing his best players as it brings more eyes to the world’s most valuable franchise. Most would point to the fact that this marketing tactic only results in the numbers increasing. It also produces holdouts that linger into camp & can affect team cohesiveness as well as result in injuries.

Dak Prescott negotiated for two years before becoming the highest paid player in NFL history. CeeDee Lamb missed mandatory minicamp & the beginning of training camp last year before becoming the second highest paid receiver at $34 million a year.

Last year, San Francisco’s Brandon Aiyuk held in, attending meetings & team activities while not practicing which allowed him to avoid fines. This lasted until late August, but he would wind up getting the contract he desired, signing for 4 years & $120 million. He would unfortunately go on to tear his ACL early in the regular season, possibly due to missing camp & not being in the best shape to absorb the punishment that comes with the sport.

Micah Parsons is a warrior, having played 63 out of 67 games thus far in his career. He’s a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate & a game wrecker who has to be accounted for anytime he puts on shoulder pads & a helmet. That sounds a lot like TJ Watt, the Pittsburgh pass rusher who just recently inked a deal worth $41 million a year to hop Myles Garrett as the highest paid defensive player in history.

Time is ticking Jerry. Good job signing Ferg, now lets get Micah done. He’s earned it, & the number is only rising.
