The success of Japanese players has been one of the biggest stories of the 21st century in baseball. Over the past 25 years, we have seen guys like Ichiro Suzuki, Yu Darvish, and Masahiro Tanaka come over and dominate the sport. The biggest stars in the majors right now is Shohei Ohtani, a Japanese player who spent four seasons in the NPB, the professional baseball league in Japan. With so much talent coming from the Land of the Rising Sun, everyone is on the lookout for the next Japanese superstar.
It appears the next candidate for this honor is Teruaki Sato of the Hanshin Tigers. Over the past few seasons, he has been making a name for himself with very strong numbers. He was also one of the star players at the 2026 World Baseball Classic. He is also expected to be posted by the Tigers within the next two seasons, and should see a bidding war for his services by MLB teams. But what makes Sato such a sought-after player?
Why is Teruaki Sato Getting so Much Hype?
Sato’s rise into international stardom happened during the 2025 season. In 139 games, he had a slashline of .277/.345/.579 with 40 home runs, 102 RBIs, and a 182 wRC+. It is considered by many to be his breakout season, and earned him a spot on Team Japan for the WBC. He was solid in the 2026 WBC, racking up three hits and two RBIs in 12 plate appearances. But 2026 has seen his numbers jump significantly. Through 53 games, he has a slashline of .372/.444/.719 with 15 home runs, 41 RBIs, and a 250 wRC+. He’s currently on pace to win the Triple-Crown.
Throughout his career, Sato has been praised for his ability to hit for power. Nearly 46% of his career hits have gone for extra bases. This alone would be impressive, but it’s even more impressive considering that the NBP is at a low point for offense. He also plays nearly half of his games in Koshien Stadium, one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in Japan. The fact that he remains a threat in less-than-ideal conditions shows that it can translate. He will have no problems being a power threat in the MLB.
He has dramatically improved his approach at the plate. At the beginning of his career, he had a strikeout rate at 38%. But every season since then, he has brought that number down. Currently, he is only striking out at a 24% rate, the lowest of his career. This new approach has not only lowered his strikeout numbers but has also improved his walk rate. In his rookie season, he only walked in 5.5% of his plate appearances. But this season, it has skyrocketed to 12%, which will catch the eye of big-league clubs.
Although he’s talked about mostly for what he can do at the plate, he’s also a solid defender. Sato is primarily a third baseman but has experience playing both corner outfield spots. He has also played these positions well. He has committed only 12 errors at third the past two seasons and none in the outfield. This versatility will be very attractive to MLB teams. They will like that they can play him at multiple positions and be creative with their lineup construction.
Sato has all the makings of being the next great Japanese baseball player. It’s only a matter of time before we see him dominating in the MLB.
