Week 1 is finally here and we are gearing up for America’s Game of the Week with Commanders vs Eagles.
The Washington Commanders kick off the 2026 season on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, taking on the defending NFC East champion Eagles. This matchup is a great way to see where Washington stands as they enter Year 3 with Dan Quinn.
Commanders vs. Eagles is already a big game, with a lot on the line for both teams. This rivalry has lasted since 1934. Washington wants to put last year’s 5-12 season behind them and, most importantly, start a new chapter for Jayden Daniels.
Washington comes into the season with big changes on both offense and defense. David Blough is now in charge of the offense, Daronte Jones leads the defense, and the team around Daniels has been rebuilt.
Philadelphia has made some changes too, but the Eagles are still the team Washington needs to measure itself against in the NFC East.
Here are three big keys for the Commanders if they want to go into Lincoln Financial Field and come out with a win.
Commanders vs. Eagles Key #1 David Blough Must Protect Jayden Daniels
This could be the biggest storyline in the Commanders vs. Eagles matchup.
Philadelphia’s defensive front is still packed with talent, including Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Nolan Smith. Washington, on the other hand, starts Week 1 without Laremy Tunsil, which is a big concern for the offensive line.
That means Blough shouldn’t treat his first regular-season game as Washington’s offensive coordinator like he needs to prove himself as a play-caller.
Make life easier for Daniels.
Washington should focus on quick passes, screens, play-action, bootlegs, and moving the pocket. They need to get the ball out fast and make Philadelphia’s defense cover the whole field, instead of letting their defensive line go after Daniels right away.
Stefon Diggs should be a big part of that plan. With Diggs joining Terry McLaurin, Daniels now has two veteran receivers who can make Washington tougher to defend.
Chig Okonkwo also gives Washington an athletic tight end who can make plays in the middle of the field.
But everything begins up front.
Nick Allegretti’s return from a calf injury is important because Washington needs stability in the middle against Carter and the Eagles’ interior defensive line. The Commanders can’t let constant pressure up the middle ruin the timing of Blough’s offense.
Daniels plays his best when he can make quick decisions. Washington needs to help him do just that.
2. Washington’s New-Look Defense Has to Make Jalen Hurts Uncomfortable
The Commanders spent the offseason rebuilding a defense that struggled in 2025.
Now comes the first test.
Jalen Hurts is still one of the toughest players Washington will face because he can extend plays and cause problems with his running. The Commanders can’t let Hurts sit comfortably in the pocket and control the game.
That puts extra pressure on Washington’s new group of pass rushers.
Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson are both cleared to play Sunday, giving Daronte Jones two key players on the edge. Oweh is especially interesting after getting 7.5 sacks in the second half of last season. With Armstrong unavailable for Week 1, Washington needs Oweh and Chaisson to create pressure.
But they also need to stay disciplined when rushing the passer.
If they rush past Hurts without control, they’ll just give him room to escape. Washington needs to collapse the pocket, keep their leverage, and force Hurts to throw under pressure.
Jones can also mix things up with creative play-calling.
His defense is expected to be more aggressive, and rookie linebacker Sonny Styles gives Washington a versatile player who can line up in different spots. Week 1 is a great chance to show Philadelphia some new defensive looks they haven’t seen on film.
The Eagles still have plenty of offensive talent, including Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert. Washington probably won’t be able to shut them down completely.
The goal is to create negative plays and force Philadelphia into tough third-down situations.
3. The Commanders Cannot Let Philadelphia Control the Line of Scrimmage
This could be the area where the Commanders vs. Eagles game is decided.
Philadelphia is known for playing physical football. The Eagles want to control the line of scrimmage, run the ball, and make their opponents play their style.
Washington can’t let that happen on Sunday.
The Commanders need to run the ball enough to keep Philadelphia’s pass rush in check. That doesn’t mean Blough should force runs into crowded defenses all day. Washington just needs to stay balanced.
Rachaad White and Jacory Croskey-Merritt bring different running styles to the offense, and Daniels’ mobility always gives defenses something extra to worry about.
On defense, Washington’s front line needs to stop Barkley from getting to the second level too often.
If Philadelphia keeps getting easy second-and-4 or third-and-2 situations, the Eagles will control the pace and eventually wear Washington out. Force Hurts to beat you by throwing on longer downs and distances.
Win on first down. Put Philadelphia behind schedule. Then let Oweh, Chaisson, and Jones use their pressure packages to attack.
That approach gives Washington its best shot.

Week 1 doesn’t decide the whole NFL season, but it can definitely set the tone.
Washington made a lot of changes this offseason after a tough 2025. Daniels is healthy again. Diggs adds another proven weapon to the offense. Blough gets his shot to shape the offense, and Jones gets his first chance to show off the new-look defense.
Philadelphia is still the defending NFC East champion, and Washington needs to show it can compete with the team at the top of the division.
If Washington does those three things, they have a real chance to make one of the biggest statements in Week 1. Starting 1-0 would be huge, especially with the Cowboys up next and the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks in Week 3.
