Best Bets for Packers vs. Panthers Thursday Night Football

The Green Bay Packers host the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field on Thursday Night Football in Week 8, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET. Both teams enter the matchup on a short week, and there are several interesting betting opportunities involving the game total, Green Bay’s backfield, and Carolina’s passing attack.

My five picks for Thursday night are Under 49.5 total points, Josh Jacobs over 58.5 rushing yards, Jalen Coker 5+ receptions, Josh Jacobs anytime touchdown, and Packers moneyline. The under is my favorite play, while Jacobs’ rushing matchup provides another opportunity worth targeting. Some of these picks carry more value than others at their current prices, so I’m breaking down the statistical reasoning and potential concerns behind each one.

1. Under 49.5 Total Points

My favorite pick for Thursday Night Football is under 49.5 total points, primarily because Green Bay’s defensive efficiency and recent scoring trends suggest this matchup could remain relatively low-scoring. The Packers have averaged just 20.6 points per game this season, the ninth-fewest in the NFL, while recording a 42% offensive success rate that ranks seventh-worst. Their defense has been considerably more impressive at limiting explosive plays, allowing a gain of at least 20 passing yards or 10 rushing yards on just 6.6% of opposing plays, the third-lowest rate in the league. Green Bay’s home games since the beginning of 2025 have averaged only 40.2 combined points, with seven of 11 finishing under the total. The Packers have also averaged just 19.8 points over their last 10 games, failing to reach their projected team total in six of those contests.

Carolina’s offense presents the biggest concern, averaging 26.5 points per game while converting 65% of its red-zone trips into touchdowns, the second-highest rate in the NFL. The Panthers have also exceeded their projected scoring total in six of their last 10 games, and their matchups have averaged 131 combined offensive plays compared with the league average of 125. However, Carolina’s aggressive offensive approach could struggle against a Green Bay defense that consistently limits explosive gains. RotoBot gives the under a 59% probability of hitting at 47.5 points, compared with an implied break-even probability of approximately 52% at -108 odds. Getting 49.5 provides an additional two points of cushion, although the price of that alternate total needs to be considered. I’m backing the under because Green Bay’s defensive strengths and recent scoring trends create a compelling path toward a game that finishes below 50 points.

2. Josh Jacobs Over 58.5 Rushing Yards

Josh Jacobs has one of the most favorable rushing matchups on the Week 8 slate against a Carolina defense allowing an NFL-high 153.2 rushing yards per game. Opposing lead running backs have exceeded their rushing-yardage lines in eight of 11 games against the Panthers this season, including Bucky Irving, who rushed for 106 yards on a 65.5-yard line in Week 7. Jacobs also rushed for 87 yards against Carolina last season and has exceeded 58.5 rushing yards in four of five games played with a game total of at least 47 points. When Green Bay has been projected to score at least 23.5 points, Jacobs has averaged 63.5 rushing yards, and the Packers enter Thursday with an implied team total of approximately 25.5 points. Those trends create an encouraging matchup for a running back who has historically been capable of handling substantial workloads.

The biggest concern is Jacobs’ playing time following his return from injury. He missed Green Bay’s first six games before returning against Detroit in Week 7, handling just 11 carries for 36 yards while playing 52% of the offensive snaps. MarShawn Lloyd has also become involved in the rotation, accounting for approximately 26% of the team’s rushing attempts, making Jacobs’ workload less predictable than it was previously. Green Bay has also called running plays on just 41% of its offensive snaps while leading, the lowest rate in the league, meaning a favorable game script doesn’t automatically guarantee additional rushing opportunities. Still, Jacobs isn’t listed on the injury report, and an increase in playing time would make this line considerably more attainable. RotoBot projects a 57% chance of Jacobs exceeding 58.5 rushing yards, compared with approximately 53% needed at -114 odds. I’m taking the over because Carolina’s run defense creates an excellent opportunity, although Jacobs’ uncertain workload keeps this behind the under on my betting card.

3. Jalen Coker 5+ Receptions

Jalen Coker has quietly become one of Carolina’s most important receiving options, making his five-reception alternate line an intriguing target against Green Bay. Through five appearances this season, Coker has recorded at least five receptions three times, including eight catches for 138 yards against Chicago, eight for 66 yards against Atlanta and six for 97 yards against Philadelphia. His receiving involvement has been particularly encouraging recently, accounting for approximately 27% of Carolina’s targets over the last two games. Green Bay’s defense also presents an interesting matchup because it allows just 9.9 yards per reception, the fourth-fewest in the NFL. That makes reception volume more appealing than relying on explosive gains to clear a receiving-yardage line. Opposing primary receivers have exceeded their reception props in eight of 14 games against the Packers, including nine-catch performances from Amon-Ra St. Brown and CeeDee Lamb.

However, Coker’s production has been inconsistent, including a disappointing Week 7 performance against Tampa Bay in which he caught just one of four targets for nine yards despite playing 86% of Carolina’s offensive snaps. His usage also changes considerably depending on game script, with his target share dropping to approximately 14% when the Panthers trail compared with 34% when they’re leading. That’s particularly important because Green Bay enters Thursday as the favorite, creating a realistic scenario in which Carolina’s passing opportunities shift away from Coker. Still, he practiced fully Tuesday despite dealing with a shoulder injury, and the Packers’ tendency to limit yards after the catch could encourage shorter passing opportunities. RotoBot gives Coker a 58% probability of recording at least five receptions, slightly above the approximately 57% break-even rate at -133 odds. I’m targeting five receptions rather than 50 receiving yards because the matchup favors shorter completions, although this remains one of the thinner plays on my card.

4. Josh Jacobs Anytime Touchdown

Josh Jacobs has an appealing opportunity to find the end zone against a Carolina defense allowing 1.50 touchdowns per game to opposing running backs, tied for the second-most in the NFL. The Panthers have struggled to prevent running backs from finishing drives, creating a favorable matchup for a Green Bay offense projected to score approximately 25.5 points. Jacobs has scored a touchdown in 10 of 13 games when the Packers have carried an implied team total of at least 23.5 points, demonstrating how frequently he has benefited from favorable scoring environments. He has also scored in five of six matchups against defenses ranked among the 10 most generous in touchdowns allowed. Even with his limited workload against Detroit in Week 7, Jacobs caught a touchdown pass, demonstrating that he can remain involved in scoring opportunities even when his rushing volume is reduced.

The concern is whether Jacobs will continue receiving the majority of Green Bay’s valuable red-zone opportunities with MarShawn Lloyd becoming more involved. The Packers have also converted just 44% of their red-zone trips into touchdowns this season, the seventh-lowest rate in the NFL, making their scoring efficiency another potential obstacle. Jacobs’ historical touchdown production and Carolina’s defensive struggles provide a reasonable argument for this pick, but the current price doesn’t offer much statistical value. RotoBot gives Jacobs a 55% chance of scoring, compared with approximately 56% required to break even at -127 odds. I’m including Jacobs as an anytime touchdown selection because of the favorable matchup and his established scoring ability, although I prefer his rushing-yardage over from a value perspective.

5. Green Bay Packers Moneyline (-185)

I’m backing the Green Bay Packers to defeat Carolina at Lambeau Field, although this is more of a game prediction than a particularly strong value bet at the current price. Green Bay enters Thursday with the advantage of playing at home against a Panthers defense allowing 27.7 points per game, the sixth-most in the NFL. Carolina’s defensive struggles create opportunities for Jordan Love and the Packers to move the football, particularly if Josh Jacobs can establish a productive rushing attack. Green Bay’s defense also provides an important advantage because of its ability to limit explosive plays, potentially forcing Carolina to sustain long drives rather than relying on quick scoring opportunities. The betting market has shown considerable support for the Packers, with approximately 79% of bets and 92% of the money backing Green Bay.

However, there are legitimate concerns about laying a substantial moneyline price with a team that hasn’t consistently delivered as a favorite. Green Bay has gone just 4-6 straight up over its last 10 games and 5-12-1 against the spread as a favorite since the beginning of 2025. Carolina’s offense has also been more productive on a per-game basis, averaging 26.5 points while demonstrating strong red-zone efficiency. The Packers’ moneyline has moved from -192 to -185, suggesting the market has shifted slightly toward Carolina, while sharper spread action has favored the Panthers at +3.5. RotoBot projects Green Bay with a 64% probability of winning, compared with approximately 65% required at -185 odds. I’m picking the Packers to win because of their defensive advantage and home-field environment, but I wouldn’t consider the moneyline a particularly attractive standalone bet at this price.

Final Thoughts: My Packers vs. Panthers Betting Picks

My strongest play for Thursday Night Football is Under 49.5 total points, followed by Josh Jacobs over 58.5 rushing yards. Green Bay’s ability to limit explosive plays, combined with Carolina’s struggles defending the run, creates a reasonable path toward a lower-scoring Packers victory with Jacobs handling a meaningful share of the offense.

Jalen Coker’s five-reception line offers some upside in PPR-style receiving volume, while Jacobs’ anytime touchdown and Green Bay’s moneyline are closer to fairly priced selections than substantial betting edges. These picks also aren’t completely independent of one another. A Packers victory built around the running game would benefit several of my selections, while Coker’s receiving outlook could become less favorable if Carolina falls behind early.

My five Thursday Night Football picks:

  1. Under 49.5 total points
  2. Josh Jacobs over 58.5 rushing yards
  3. Jalen Coker 5+ receptions
  4. Josh Jacobs anytime touchdown
  5. Green Bay Packers moneyline (-185)

All odds and projections reflect the supplied Wednesday-afternoon betting snapshot and may change before kickoff. The 49.5 total is not the same quoted market as RotoBot’s 47.5-point line, so its actual price needs to be checked before placing a wager.
