For the first time since Week 9 of the 2023 season, the Arizona Cardinals will have a different starting quarterback. Jacoby Brissett will get the nod this week because Kyler Murray is dealing with a foot injury, per ESPN NFL Insiders Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler. Murray suffered the injury in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. Jacoby Brissett will make his first start as an Arizona Cardinal against the 4-1 Indianapolis Colts.
Cardinals Trust Jacoby
The Arizona Cardinals signed Jacoby Brissett to a two-year, $12.5 million deal earlier this offseason. The front office has a long history with the quarterback. General Manager Monti Ossenfort was in New England when the team drafted Brissett in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
“I’ve actually known Jacoby for a long time. We drafted him when I was in New England, and I’ve always been a fan of Jacoby,” Ossenfort said on The Dave Pasch Podcast. “He’s played and won a lot of games, and Jacoby still got a good skill set. He’s a big guy. He can deliver the ball down the field. He can get out and move when he has to. So, we were excited to add a guy who brings that veteran presence to that quarterback room.”
Jacoby Brissett has ties with Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork as well. The three of them formed a close relationship in Cleveland. In 2022, Brissett was the team’s starting quarterback, Petzing served as the quarterbacks coach, and Woolfork assisted the quarterbacks under Petzing. In 11 games as a starter, Brissett completed 64% of his passes and recorded over 2,600 passing yards. Jacoby Brissett threw for 12 touchdown passes and only six interceptions with the Cleveland Browns.
Head Coach Jonathan Gannon crossed paths with Jacoby Brissett during his time in Indianapolis. Gannon was the defensive backs coach for the Colts from 2018 to 2020. “Obviously, my relationship with Drew, Israel, and JG kind of drew me here,” Brissett said at his Cardinals introductory press conference. “I think if I can go to work with the people that I go to work with every day and enjoy going to work, then the football stuff will take care of itself.”
Brissett Sharp in Preseason
Jacoby Brissett had an impressive preseason. Brissett completed 11-of-16 passes for 138 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, showcasing command of Drew Petzing’s offensive scheme.
The 10-year NFL veteran will look to carry over the success he had in the preseason against his former team. Jacoby Brissett spent four seasons in Indianapolis. He appeared in 46 games (30 starts) with the Colts, recording 6,059 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
