Clay Holmes Breaks Fibula In Latest Mets Injury Blow

The most disappointing team in the majors this year has been the New York Mets. Coming into the season with postseason aspirations, they are among the worst teams in baseball. They are 18-26 and sit in last place in the NL East. One of the loan bright spots has been how well Clay Holmes has pitched. Over 52 2/3 innings, he had a 2.39 ERA with 45 strikeouts to 18 walks, a 1.101 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 166. He also had eight consecutive starts of giving up two or fewer runs. He was becoming the ace of the Mets staff.

But his strong start to the season came to a screeching halt on Friday, May 15th. During his start against the New York Yankees, Holmes took a line drive off the bat of Spencer Jones in the top of the fourth inning. Although Holmes stayed in the game and pitched into the fifth, it was revealed after the game that the comebacker had broken Holmes’ fibula. While no official timeline has been announced, he’s expected to be out for a long time. But where do the Mets go from here, and will they be able to replace him?

Clay Holmes is the Latest of a Long List of Injured Mets

This is just the latest injury blow for the Mets. They currently have 11 players on the injured list, including key starters like Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr., Jorge Polanco, and Francisco Alvarez. All of these players were expected to be the team’s main contributors. If the Mets were going to be successful, these players would play a major role. Even though their struggles started before these players got hurt, it makes it much harder for them to turn it around. Without them, the roster looks uncompetitive.

If the Mets were going to turn this season around, Holmes was going to play a major role. The one place where the Mets have done well this year is starting pitching. Holmes, Nolan McLean, and Freddy Peralta had been very reliable this season. They were consistently pitching five to six strong innings and putting the Mets in a position to win. While the offense did not come through for them, it was one of the few things that gave fans hope. If the team could get healthy and the offense played better, they had a chance to get back into contention.

With this news, the Mets should embrace the youth movement. They will not be able to compete for a playoff spot in 2026. They should turn their attention to next season and put their roster in the best position to compete. Part of that is identifying which prospects can contribute at the MLB level. Now, there is no one in the organization who will replace Holmes. He was pitching at an elite level, and it’s unfair to expect anyone to replicate that. That being said, there are a few intriguing pitching prospects that should get a shot.

The most likely person to get called up is Jack Wenniger. He has looked great for Triple-A Syracuse this year. In 33.1 innings, he has a 1.08 ERA with 38 strikeouts to 18 walks, and a 1.11 WHIP. He has more than earned an opportunity to prove himself in the MLB. The second option is Jonah Tong. The second-best prospect in the Mets system had a cup of coffee in the majors last season. In 18 1/3 innings, he had a 7.71 ERA with 22 strikeouts to nine walks, a 1.768 WHIP, and a 54 ERA+. He was sent down to the minors to work on his third and fourth pitches and has seen mixed results.

The Holmes injury feels like the final nail in the Mets’ 2026 season. It’s time for them to focus on the future and prioritize developing their young players.
