Carlos Correa Gets Worst Case Scenario from Injury Update

The era of the Houston Astros’ dominance appears to be at an end. They have gotten off to a dreadful start, with a 15-22 record. They are in fourth in the AL West and sit four games back of the last wild card spot.

While it’s early, things got a lot worse as the team announced Carlos Correa will miss the rest of the season due to a left ankle injury he suffered while taking batting practice before Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will have to undergo surgery and will need

Of course, this is not the first time an ankle injury has surrounded Correa. Back in the 2022-23 offseason, both the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets backed out of long-term deals due to concerns surrounding his ankle. But this injury was on his right ankle, the opposite of the one he’s getting surgery on now.

This is a major blow to the Astros season. It hurts their chances of turning the season around. But is it time for the Astros to wave the white flag?

Is It Time for the Astros to wave the White Flag After Carlos Correa’s injury?

Correa has been one of the bright spots of a rather lackluster season for the Astros. Outside of Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker, Correa has been the most important hitter for Houston. In 32 games, he has slashed .279/.369/.418 with three home runs, 16 RBIs, and a 119 OPS+.

He ranks in the top three in nearly every offensive category for the Astros. This type of production was huge for Houston and gave fans hope they could turn it around.

This alone is bad for the Astros. They are going to have a very hard time filling that hole in the lineup. But what makes it worse is the growing list of players they have on the IL. Hitters like Jeremy Pena, Yainer Diaz, Taylor Trammell, and Jake Meyers are all out for the next few weeks.

They will also be without pitchers like Hunter Brown, Cristian Javier, Josh Hader, and Tatsuya Imai. All of these players were expected to be big contributors for the team this season. Losing one of these players would be a blow, but losing all of them is a catastrophe.

At this point, the Astors have too many holes to fill on the roster. Great players like Correa and Alvarez can help a banged-up team tread water. But when one of those players also winds up on the shelf, there is little hope. The smart move for the Astros would be to punt this season and begin to re-tool the roster.

Many already thought that the Astros were nearing the end of their contention window. These injuries slammed it shut, and it’s time for the team to focus on the future.

This focus on the future starts with the team trading off some pieces at the deadline. Guys like Walker, Isaac Parades, and Steven Okert should all be on the trading block and moved before the deadline. They should be able to land several prospects for these. While they may not be among the best prospects in baseball, they will be players the Astros can develop into decent players. They could also be assets that the team uses during the offseason to try to compete in 2027.

The loss of Correa is the final nail in the 2026 Astros coffin. It’s time for the team to give up on the season and turn its attention to being competitive in a season or two.
