*The following matchups are based on the most recent depth chart announcements and could change due to unforeseen injuries or game plan adjustments.*
WR Jaylen Waddle | CB Devon Witherspoon
The Broncos acquired Jaylen Waddle in the offseason via trade from the Miami Dolphins with high expectations that he could take the pass game to the next level, but through five weeks he’s currently the WR36. Waddle, aside from week two, hasn’t even eclipsed 40 receiving yards, and I don’t see why that would change this week against one of the NFL’s best young, defense-minded head coaches.
Devon Witherspoon is having another great season, ranking 15th among 104 qualified CBs. Through five games, Witherspoon hasn’t allowed a TD yet. The Seattle Seahawks rank 3rd in points allowed to WRs (25.7) and are poised for another lockdown game against Denver, which ranks 25th in passing yards per game.
Bench Jaylen Waddle
WR Brandin Cooks | CB Amik Robertson
The San Francisco 49ers may be one of the unluckiest teams over the past decade in terms of injuries. With a depleted WR room, Cooks finds himself in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game as the 33-year-old veteran filled in last week when Deebo Samuel went down and immediately filled Samuel’s role; now he did have 2 targets for 1 reception and a TD, but a full week of preparation will get Cooks right.
Amik Robertson has been a good CB for the Commanders to start the year, and I’m not taking that away from him, as he’s actually ranked higher than Witherspoon on PFF (14th). The rest of the Washington defense is the problem, allowing 39.3 fantasy points to WRs, ranking them T-1st, plus a secondary as injured as the Niners’ receiving corps. Despite Robertson’s emergence, it just won’t be enough.
Start Brandin Cooks
WR Keenan Allen | CB Marcus Harris
Brandin Cooks won’t be the oldest player on today’s list, as 34-year-old Keenan Allen is having an under-the-radar type of season. He’s not lighting up the box score, but Alec Pierce remains on IR, Josh Downs is questionable, and even if Downs plays, Allen should be in your flex this week. Allen has back-to-back games where Daniel Jones has targeted him nine times in each.
Marcus Harris will be responsible for locking down Keenan Allen while he lines up in the slot, and bad news for Allen, as Harris is 20th out of 104 qualified CBs on PFF; however, like Brandin Cooks against the Commanders, the benefit to starting Allen this week is that the Titans are allowing the 7th most points for WRs (37.2)
Start Keenan Allen
WR Ladd McConkey | CB L’Jarius Sneed
Ladd McConkey is starting to give me Brian Thomas Jr. vibes. WR13 as a rookie, and a down year, but still finished as the WR30 last season, and now, after expectations were sky-high in McDaniels’ offense, the team as a whole has been terrible. McConkey has been banged up, missed Week 4, and is currently listed as questionable, but even if he plays, is he worth starting?
The Kansas City Chiefs defense ranks 2nd in fantasy points allowed to WRs (24.9); despite this, L’Jarius Sneed has not found success this season. Sneed ranks 103rd out of 104 on PFF and has allowed 278 yards this season. This game will go one of two ways. McDaniels schemes it up, attacks Sneed, and McConkey is the only WR to produce, or the Chargers continue to fall apart.
Start Ladd McConkey
