Patriots Rookie Minicamp: Key Developments and Standouts

The New England Patriots’ rookie minicamp is underway at Gillette Stadium, marking the first on-field action for the team’s 2025 draft class, undrafted free agents, and several tryout players. The minicamp, running through May 9–11, is non-contact and non-padded, focused on acclimating rookies to the Patriots’ system, coaching staff, and expectations, and cut down to solidify a 53-man roster for the 2025 season.

Will Campbell’s Immediate Impact

First-round pick Will Campbell has already drawn significant attention as he works at left tackle. Campbell’s combination of power, footwork, and leadership has stood out in drills, and he’s widely expected by many people in the media to compete for a starting role from day one. Veteran Morgan Moses has reportedly volunteered to mentor Campbell, further accelerating his transition to the NFL. Campbell’s performance in pass protection and run-blocking drills has been a highlight, even though full evaluation awaits padded practices.

Skill Position Highlights

Third-round receiver Kyle Williams made several impressive catches late in Friday’s session, including a high sideline grab and getting open deep on another impressive rep. Williams’ speed and route-running have been evident, and he’s expected to push for a significant role in the receiving corps if he can improve his consistency.

Running back Lan Larison, an undrafted free agent from UC Davis, has impressed a lot of people with his quickness and versatility as a receiver out of the backfield. Larison was a frequent target for both quarterbacks in camp and is being watched as a potential multi-purpose back who could earn a roster spot.

Tight end C.J. Dippre, another undrafted free agent, has been used heavily as a blocker but is getting more chances to run routes. He received direct coaching from Mike Vrabel and is considered one of the most likely UDFAs to make the 53-man roster.

Quarterback and Other Offensive Notes

Quarterbacks Ben Wooldridge (UDFA) and Jake Wilcox (tryout) split reps, frequently targeting Larison and fellow UDFA receiver Efton Chism III, who also managed to get open on multiple occasions. Second-year player Jiles was among the most-targeted options, highlighted by a high-point catch through contact and a toe-tap on the sideline as they all fight for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Defensive Standouts

Although it is difficult for defensive players to stand out in a non-contact setting, undrafted defensive back Brandon Crossley showed good instincts, breaking on throws and consistently being around the football.

Vrabel’s Hands-On Coaching Approach

Head coach Mike Vrabel has been highly involved, providing direct feedback, running positional drills, and even stepping in as a middle linebacker during walkthroughs to help players with alignments and adjustments. Other coaches, including running backs coach Tony Dews, have also participated in drills, with Dews taking handoffs during 11-man formations.

Coaching Staff Update

Defensive coordinator Terrell Williams is currently away from the facility due to a medical issue but remains engaged with the team via Zoom. Inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has been handling on-field defensive coordinator duties in Williams’ absence. Williams has emphasized that he is still actively involved in meetings and communication with the staff and players.

Roster and Contract Updates

The Patriots have signed eight of their eleven 2025 draft picks and 16 rookie free agents ahead of minicamp. Notable signings include receiver Kyle Williams, center Jared Wilson, defensive tackle Joshua Farmer, and several others. Will Campbell, running back TreVeyon Henderson, and safety Craig Woodson are the only draftees yet to sign their contracts, but all are participating in camp.

What’s Next

Minicamp wraps up Sunday, and then OTAs start on May 19, when the rookies and vets share the field for the first time. The early buzz is that this draft class is already turning heads, setting up a lively offseason battle for snaps. When the pads finally pop at OTAs, we’ll find out if Will Campbell’s quick feet can open real running lanes for Rhamondre Stevenson for the 2025 season.
