Training Camp Comes To An End
The Buffalo Bills wrapped up their training camp on Thursday at St. John Fisher University in Pittsford, New York. The rookies, most notably Maxwell Hairston, showed out throughout camp, as did second-year WR Keon Coleman. The Bills’ young core will be something to watch throughout the preseason to see which rookies are here to stay and which young players are ready to emerge as the next NFL superstar.
Giants Rookie Sensations
New York Giants HC and former Buffalo Bills OC Brian Daboll returns once again to Highmark today at 1 p.m. EST, as he looks to see rookie QB Jaxson Dart make some plays and solidify himself as the future of Giants football. Abdul Carter, on the other hand, will be making noise throughout the game. If he plays a half vs the Bills backup O-line, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finished with a sack or two. However, this could provide some young Bills offensive linemen the opportunity to showcase their potential if they can shut down Carter’s Debut.
Bills Slot WR Battle Begins
HC Sean McDermott will be sitting Josh Allen and some starters this week, but some things to watch for are the newly signed free agent acquisitions this offseason in Elijah Moore and Joshua Palmer as they fight for the starting slot WR role. It remains as one of the only starting offensive roles up for grabs this season.
Ray Davis Is The Key
Many eyes will be on the Bills’ 2nd year RB Ray Davis, who showed exceptional patience and explosiveness as a rookie and is a threat to James Cook’s future on the Bills. If Davis can dominate throughout the preseason, it may put a hold on James Cook’s contract talks even longer. Going in James Cook’s favor, however, is the recent deal between the Los Angeles Rams and RB Kyren Williams in which Williams received a three-year, $33 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed.
Future Of The Secondary
Defensively, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tre’Davious White out there despite his injury history, his status as a starter will remain in question as Bills 1st-round pick Maxwell Hairston is already making noise in camp and looks to do the same in this matchup against a weak Giants receiving core, absent of Malik Nabers. On the other hand, the matchup will provide Hairston some valuable time against veteran QBs Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.
Playcalling
Lastly, I expect HC Sean McDermott to experiment with four WR sets to see not only Elijah Moore and Joshua Palmer on the field together but also some more two-TE sets that will allow Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid on the field together. It’s currently unknown what starters will sit out entirely during this matchup, but the first few drives can provide some insight into what new plays McDermott has been designing over the offseason.
