Every NFL season begins with a long list of “contenders,” but by the time January arrives, only a handful truly have what it takes to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
The difference between a contender and a pretender isn’t always obvious on paper. It comes down to quarterback play, roster balance, coaching, and the ability to win in big moments.
Heading into the 2026 season, here’s a breakdown of which teams are real Super Bowl contenders and which ones might be fooling us.
TRUE CONTENDERS- Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs remain the standard. After a complete overhaul of the secondary, losing Trent McDuffie and Jaylon Watson, but adding names like Mansoor Delane through the draft and Kader Kohou via free agency.
As long as Patrick Mahomes is under center, Kansas City is never out of the Super Bowl conversation. Even with roster turnover, they consistently find ways to win when it matters most. With rare draft capital in the 2026 draft, you saw the Chiefs taking advantage of it and upgrading their roster.
- Why they’re contenders: Elite QB + championship coaching
- What could stop them: Offensive inconsistency at receiver + Defensive Turnover
Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are still knocking on the door. The change in HC to Joe Brady and the addition of DJ Moore should make this offense even more efficient. Josh Allen gives them one of the highest ceilings in football. If the defense holds up in big moments, Buffalo has everything needed to finally break through.
With the additions of veteran players such as Bradley Chubb and CJGJ, the defense seems to have taken a step forward. Now, can that help the Bills get over the hump?
- Why they’re contenders: MVP-level QB + explosive offense
- What could stop them: Defensive inconsistency in the playoffs
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most complete teams in football.
With elite coaching, an average defense, and a balanced offense led by Brock Purdy. The addition of Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, and re-signing Trent Williams help the 49ers, who are built to go all the way, and no one is surprised.
The lack of a pass rush in 2025 is a main concern for the defense, and Raheem Morris, the new DC, will focus on it. The addition of Nate Hobbs will help the defensive backfield, but there is stil a lot of questions as to where the pass rush will be coming from again in the 2026 season.
There is some concern with their handling of the draft and the moving around, as opposed to taking valuable players, but Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers’ coaches always find a way to make it work.
- Why they’re contenders: Balanced roster + top-tier coaching
- What could stop them: Injuries or inconsistent defensive play
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles continue to impress. Howie Roseman continues his draft day black magic and comes out on top with the replacement for the soon-to-be-traded AJ Brown. Many had Makai Lemon being taken in the top 15 players of the draft, but he almost fell right to the Steelers at 21, but the Eagles swooped in and got their guy.
Jalen Hurts gives them dual-threat explosiveness, and their roster depth is among the best in the NFC. We must not forget that the Eagles are at their best when they run the football and play sound defense. We will have to wait and see if an aging O-line and young core on defense can step up and bring this team back to the promised land.
- Why they’re contenders: Elite QB + loaded roster
- What could stop them: Health and late-game execution (COACHING)
PRETENDERS (FOR NOW)- Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys dominate the regular season, but January tells a different story.
Until Dak Prescott and this team prove they can win deep in the playoffs, it’s hard to take them seriously as true contenders. The re-signing of Javonte Williams and George Pickens will keep this offense humming as long as the injury bug does not bite. Dallas looks primed for a Top-5 season on offense.
The defense needs to greatly improve as well; they did take arguably the best player in the draft, Caleb Downs, from OSU. Many believe selecting him, as well as Malachi Lawrence, could help this new DC turn the defense around just enough to complement an extremely high-powered offense.
- Why they look like contenders: Talent + regular-season success
- Why they’re pretenders: Playoff inconsistency + Defensive inconsistency
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are always competitive but not quite a contender, as for years now, they have been a playoff staple, only to be embarrassed the first chance they got to prove they belong. The offense has upgraded the WR position with the additions of Michael Pittman and Germie Bernard.
Omar Khan slipped up a bit in the draft as well, letting the Eagles pull off the well-covered Makai Lemon steal of a pick at number 20. Still, the Steelers are missing the most important piece, the quarterback.
Led by T. J. Watt, the defense keeps them in games. Cam Heyward is still playing at a Pro-Bowl level. The Steelers also added new talent in the secondary with Jaquan Brisker and Jamel Dean.
The O-line also got some additions with Max Iheanachor and Jennings Dunker, but the offense still lacks the firepower needed to compete with top AFC teams.
- Why they look like contenders: Elite defense
- Why they’re pretenders: Offensive ceiling + QB questions
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have the pieces, but not the consistency.
Trevor Lawrence flashes elite potential, until very late in the season, many even questioned if he was really the guy for this offense and Liam Coen. The Jaguars finished the season very strong and look to continue that into the 2026 season, but the team as a whole hasn’t put together a complete season.
Wide receivers like Parker Washington and Brian Thomas Jr. need to step up and be consistent for the offense to take the next step, especially after losing Travie Etienne to the Saints in free agency, along with Devin Lloyd by way of free agency to the Carolina Panthers.
- Why they look like contenders: Franchise QB + talent
- Why they’re pretenders: Inconsistency on both sides of the ball
Final Thoughts
Every year, teams rise and fall, but the gap between contender and pretender is razor-thin.
The true contenders have:
- Elite Quarterback Play
- Roster Balance
- Masterful Coaching
- Proven Ability in Big Moments
The pretenders? They might look the part, but haven’t proven it when it matters most. As the 2026 season unfolds, some of these teams will flip sides. That’s the beauty of the NFL.
But for now, the line is clear, and only a few teams are truly built to finish the job.
