Kansas City Chiefs @ Buffalo Bills, a tale of the 2020s rivalry continues as we have won 5 straight regular season games, but when will it finally turn into playoff success? This was the most lopsided victory for the Bills in the Allen–Mahomes era, despite the 28-21 final score. This game was important for both teams in determining how the rest of the NFL would view them going forward.
Game Recap
Both quarterbacks broke personal records Sunday. Josh Allen had the highest completion percentage of his career in the regular season, completing 23 of his 26 pass attempts (88%). Patrick Mahomes, on the other hand, had arguably the worst game of his career, completing a personal worst 15 of 34 passes (44%).
It wasn’t just the Quarterbacks having polar opposite games that contributed to the Bills’ victory. Buffalo rookie CB Maxwell Hairston made some great plays on the field, defending speedster Xavier Worthy and having a game-winning interception late in the 4th quarter.
My Player of the Game
Joshua Patrick Allen, after weeks of poor offensive performances and turnovers, Josh Allen did what Josh Allen does best: put those games in the past and dominated when he needed to. Allen also set a new NFL record with 79 rushing touchdowns, the most of any QB in NFL History.
Playoff Seeding
Who would’ve thought that the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots would be the #1, #2, and #3 seeds at the trade deadline? Hats off to those franchises this season, but it puts Buffalo in an interesting situation heading into the second half of the season. While I still fully believe Buffalo will win the AFC East, teams like the Kansas City Chiefs are currently not even in the playoffs.
I believe the Division winners will be the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, and Baltimore Ravens, yes, the 3-5 Ravens. That leaves 3 wildcard slots, the Patriots or for sure making it, and the Chargers are heading in the right direction, so who’s the 7th seed? Is it really going to come down to the Chiefs and… the Pittsburgh Steelers with Mike Tomlin‘s consecutive winning season streak? I believe so, regardless of what happens, this may very well be Buffalo’s best chance at a Super Bowl run with Joe Burrow out, the Ravens potentially missing the playoffs, and finally having home-field advantage over the Chiefs.
Trade Deadline
Buffalo has inquired about Saints’ WRs Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers, and I’d like to think we at least called Jacksonville for Brian Thomas Jr., but that’s just a dream. As it stands, Buffalo still has the lowest available cap space with just under $2M. Any deal would likely need to be for a rookie contract, but we won’t officially know until the 4 pm trade deadline later this afternoon.
What’s Ahead
The 6-2 Bills have a nice and easy schedule ahead, playing the 2-7 Dolphins again, defeating them 31-21 back in week 3, but then a playoff team in Tampa Bay, followed by a Thursday night matchup against a rollercoaster Texans team that still feels like it has no identity.
