Week 5 DFS Plays: Finding the right pieces to build around chalky Lions-Cardinals game

Week 5 DFS Plays

Last week was my worst week for my DFS Plays as my Seattle stack on quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba fell short of high expectations.

But there’s always a new slate for DFS – and this week will be interesting Main Slate. The obvious player pool from the Detroit-Arizona game will dominate a lot of the lineups as bad matchups, injuries and wet and windy weather from Hurricane Isaias in the eastern part of the country are playing havoc on the schedule.

So this week’s story will focus on some plays outside of the Lions and the Cardinals, but I will mention them as chalky plays. But I’m not going to completely ignore that game as 4 of my 10 Main Slate lineups will be concentrated on this game. It’s just too juicy to ignore.

Let’s get into the Week 5 plays!

QB DFS Plays

Geno Smith, New York Jets ($5,000, 3.5 percent rostered)

Detroit’s Jared Goff ($6,600, 12.8 percent) is the better play on my spreadsheet, and Arizona’s Jacoby Brissett ($5,500, 6 percent) is also a good play as well. But it’s Geno Smith, who is my third favorite play at the QB position.

Smith will face a Cleveland Browns team that is allowing 19.4 DraftKings points to QBs this season, and those quarterbacks have included Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield and Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers.

A touch of concern for Smith and the Jets is the remnants of Hurricane Isaias as the worst of the weather is expected to reach the New York City area right after the game starts.

Other plays: Jordan Love, Green Bay ($5,700, 5.1 percent) and Kirk Cousins, Las Vegas ($5,400, 2.3 percent)

RB DFS Plays

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis ($7,800, 6.8 percent rostered)

Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor is the best value among RBs on my spreadsheet, but there are about 6 other RBs worth playing in DFS, not including the chalky, Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs ($9,800, 65.7 percent).

The Pittsburgh Steelers have given up 24.8 DK points to RBs this season, setting up well for Taylor in a game that is expected to see plenty of rain.

San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey ($8,200, 4.7 percent) has averaged around 25 fantasy points a game against the Seahawks in his career, and Chicago’s D’Andre Swift ($6,200, 6 percent) has the whole backfield to himself with Kyle Monangai missing because of a turf toe.

Other plays: Chase Brown, Cincinnati ($6,900, 31 percent); Aaron Jones Sr., Minnesota ($6,500, 4.8 percent) and Emanuel Wilson, Seattle ($5,300, 7.9 percent)

WR DFS Plays

Tre’ Harris, Los Angeles Chargers ($4,100, 2.9 percent rostered)

Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba ($8,800, 38.9 percent) and Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown ($7,900, 32.1 percent) are great plays this week but they will probably remain the two highest rostered WRs on the Main Slate.

The Chargers’ Tre’ Harris gets my nod as he is the second best value on my spreadsheet, right behind Pittsburgh’s Roman Wilson ($3,700, 17.2 rostered).

Harris is expected to see good percentage of the pass game work as Quinten Johnston has already been ruled out for the Chargers. Ladd McConkey ($5,600, 0.3 percent) is questionable despite not practicing at all this week. I believe McConkey is going to miss the AFC West Division matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Other plays: Garrett Wilson, NY Jets ($6,600, 12.8 percent); Michael Wilson, Arizona ($6,200, 12.4 percent); Carnell Tate, Tennessee ($5,300, 3.3 percent); and Tre Tucker, Las Vegas ($4,800, 1 percent)

TE DFS Plays

Kenyon Sadiq, New York Jets ($3,800, 5.5 percent rostered)

Sadiq fulfills my weekly play of teaming up my QB with one of his receivers, and Sadiq’s ZERO last week does not scare me. Bounce back!

The Browns have struggled against TEs as they are a Top 10 in receptions allowed (25), receiving yards allowed (242), TDs allowed (3) and are giving up 16.8 DK points a game.

And of course, Arizona’s Trey McBride ($6,700, 15.9 percent) and Detroit’s Sam LaPorta ($4,900, 13.9 percent) are going to be at the top of the rostered TEs list, but the Lions (29.2 points, 1st) and the Cardinals (18.6 points, 6th) are both horrible against TEs.

Other plays: Brock Bowers, Las Vegas ($7,000, 6.4 percent); George Kittle, San Francisco ($5,200, 5.7 percent); and Harold Fannin Jr., Cleveland ($4,400, 4 percent)

DST DFS Plays

Minnesota ($3,100, 3.5 percent) at New Orleans

Washington ($2,900, 4.2 percent) home against NY Giants

Las Vegas ($2,500, 0.7 percent) at New England
