While everyone was scrambling to pick up the Miami Dolphins new starting running back on their waiver wires, there are still some good stashes to keep your eye in the next week or two.
Ollie Gordon and Jaylen Wright are expected to replace the injured De’Von Achane for the Dolphins and a big week from New York Jets rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq has him screaming up the waiver wire charts to name a few of this week’s must-haves on the waiver wire.
But stashes are for players who have some upside if the next injury takes out a key starter. You should never get complicit with your team if the injury bug has not hit it yet. It’s the NFL and injuries are bound to happen.
Let’s get into this week’s stashes!
Waiver Wire Stashes
Ty Johnson, Buffalo (0.1 percent on Yahoo!, 1 percent on Sleeper)
When you get high praise from your starting quarterback, your teammates notice.
When that high praise is from Buffalo’s Josh Allen, we all should pay more attention.
And attention is not what Ty Johnson is getting on the waiver wire.
Johnson made his season debut in the Bills’ home win against the Los Angeles Chargers, and Allen said Johnson was the difference in the victory.
However, Johnson is still overlooked as James Cook III is entrenched as the starting running back, but picking up Johnson may be wise as safety net if you are a Cook manager.
In his first game, Johnson played 23 percent of the snaps, compared to Ray Davis’ 8 percent.
And Johnson produced as he finished with 4 catches on 4 targets for 50 yards.
Roman Wilson, Pittsburgh (1 percent on Yahoo!, 4 percent on Sleeper)
Roman Wilson has been overshadowed since the NFL Draft as the Steelers drafted Germie Bernard in the second round this spring.
But Wilson has put in the work to entrench himself as the Steelers’ No. 3 WR after logging the second most snaps this season.
Wilson’s rookie season had more injury highlights than stats as he missed a large portion of last season thanks to ankle and hamstring injuries.
He appears healthy this season and has 11 catches for 114 yards and his first TD of the season in the win against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Cody White, Las Vegas (0.1 percent Yahoo!, 0.1 percent on Sleeper)
Cody White busted onto the scene with his two-touchdown game in the Raiders second game of the season.
But now he has the opportunity to become the team’s No. 3 WR option behind Tre Tucker and Jalen Nailor.
Jack Bech suffered a broken forearm in Las Vegas’ road win against New Orleans on Sunday.
White stepped in and played the third most snaps among WRs in the victory.
His stats may be underwhelming (3 catches for 28 yards and the 2 TDs) and TE Brock Bowers returned from his preseason knee surgery, but White’s services may be needed as the Raiders play Kansas City, New England, Buffalo and LA Rams in their next four games.
Jeremy Ruckert, NY Jets (0.1 percent on Yahoo!, 0.1 percent on Sleeper)
While most was rushing to the TE waiver wire to pick up Sadiq, Jeremy Ruckert has a solid game in Sadiq’s shadow.
With Mason Taylor missing the Detroit game with a thumb injury, Ruckert gave QB Geno Smith a solid third option behind WR Garrett Wilson and Sadiq and finished with 5 receptions on 5 targets for 39 yards and a TD. WR Adonai Mitchell also missed the Detroit game with a finger injury.
Even when Taylor has been healthy in the first two games, Ruckert has played at least 34 percent of the snaps in each game.
If Taylor and Mitchell’s injuries linger, Ruckert should continue to see targets in the passing game. Taylor and Mitchell were not practicing on Wednesday (Sept. 30).
