HOT TAKE #1: Jackson is the undisputed QB1
ESPN puts Lamar Jackson at QB3 for Week 1 . That’s ahead of Jaxson Dart, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert, and it signals something big: Lamar is about to deliver a vintage MVP-level fantasy season, and that starts with their relatively easy schedule in Indy.
Baltimore opens against Indianapolis, a defense that struggled against mobile QBs last year. If the Colts and Shane Steichen offense can push against Minter’s defense, which they have enough firepower to do if they stay healthy, this could be looking like an explosive outing for the Ravens offense and Declan Doyle’s new scheme.
Jackson is behind Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen in the ranks for Week 1 this week, but Jackson could finish double-digit points ahead of the next best at the position. Allen has a tough matchup against the Texans at Houston, so Hurts’ matchup against the Commanders at home is more favorable.
However, it is tradition that Saquon Barkley breaks Washington twice a year in a potential bounce-back season, and while Derrick Henry has done the same with the Colts historically, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackson takes a few deep shots more than normal. Ultimately, I see this game becoming a back-and-forth game environment compared to the NFC East showdown, with Jackson having the higher ceiling but Hurts with the higher floor.
HOT TAKE #2: Top-10 RB Bucky, not a fluke?
Tampa’s Bucky Irving, now healthy, sits at RB21 in PPR, ahead of Quinshon Judkins, Marshawn Lloyd, D’Andre Swift, and David Montgomery. The Steelers pair Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle, like Irving and new dual-back Kenneth Gainwell, fall right below them in the consensus ranks. A top-10 finish in Week 1 might be bold, but I could see him getting multiple chances for touchdowns, like his four-week stretch last season before his injury.
However, I think the Bucs’ lead back will get a chance to get off to a nice start with a favorable matchup against the Bengals, despite their revamped unit. This game against Cincinnati should be a high-scoring affair, as Gainwell could take away some receiving work later this season; Irving should still set for a big workload, as he dealt with injuries all season last year. The offensive line should also be a healthier unit entering Week 1.
HOT TAKE #3: Tet McMillan, a 20-pointer vs. CHI?
Carolina’s second-year receiver Tetairoa McMillan debuts at WR9 (in PPR) and ahead of DeVonta Smith, Garrett Wilson, and George Pickens. As a rookie, he had one 30-point-plus game vs. Atlanta in Week 11, but otherwise has not had a 20-plus-point performance in the NFL for fantasy football. McMillan was consistent as a rookie but didn’t have the boom games Emeka Egbuka had early on in 2025 or reach his true potential in the Panthers offense.
Against Tampa in Week 16, he was close with 19.3, but I think he can start Week 1 with a highlight day against Chicago and something he’s only done once. Tet’s already ranked like a veteran star. If he dominates the Bears in Week 1, which is a weakness of theirs, he becomes the hottest trade target in fantasy from a “safe but boring” pick into a breakout young star. This is especially if they move him around the outside and take advantage of slot matchups in Dave Canales’ offense in 2026.
HOT TAKE #4: Juwan Johnson, Repeat Top 3 TE?
Juwan Johnson can be a top 3 TE in Week 1 vs. the Lions because Week 1 historically produces outlier TE explosions, Detroit has repeatedly been soft vs. tight ends early in seasons, and Johnson’s usage profile matches the exact archetype that tends to break Week 1 as the 15th highest projected tight end.
In 2025, he was already the TE1 last season for New Orleans in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals (another pass-funnel defense to the tight end) with 8 catches on 11 targets and 76 yards. In 2024, Johnson was the TE5, scoring a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers.
In a potential shootout with Tyler Shough in year two against a formidable Lions offense they will have to keep up with, this has the makings of fireworks in Detroit. The New Orleans pass-catching weapon finished 8th with his strong finish in fantasy last season and has a chance to start off 2026 strong.
